Replacement Winshield
« on: March 24, 2012, 01:51:50 AM »

Hi,

I want to replace my stock windshield shield with new aftermarket product. Question is? Any tips for removing existing windshield and refitting new one. Simple task I know but any usefull tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Use some purple locktite on the screws when installing the new shield. Seen a friends streetglide's winshield screws continually back-out after he replaced his. That stopped after applying some purple locktite.

You may have to loosen the screws that hold the fairing in place (4 total) to get the windshield off (my original windshield was stuck to the fairing).  If you take all four out, as well as the windshield screws, remember - there's now nothing holding the fairing in place except friction.  Also, if you take the two fairing screws near the front forks out, they can be a bitch to get back in...if you drop one, you may need a magnet retriever to fish it out (guess how I know this).  Don't over tighten any screws that go into the fairing - there are actually torque values on these screws.  Lastly, anytime I'm working around the front end, I place a thickly folded towel on the front fender to prevent any dings from dropped tools, screws, etc.

If all the fairing and windshield screws are removed and the fairing falls, it's going to land on your fender.

With no spots and no screws, say hello to a ding on your fender.   >:(.  Have to be much more careful on street glides. I do the towel thing any time I am around that front fender.   It is very easy to damage it.  :'(

Just remove three windshield screws. Pull out old one will be a.little tough though.  Then slide in
New one line up and lightly tighten the two outer screws then pull on top of shield toward front of
Bike and middle hole will line right up.

Don't over tighten screws just snug them... over tightening them can crack paint on outer fairing, and/or pull the plugs (or whatever they are called) out of the inner fairing.

OK Thanks guys. From what I see it looks like I just loosen the 3screws along the windshield chrome trim? Then gently pull out existing windshield...... Then new windshield slips into position! Correct?

I guess I do not have too loosen any screws etc on the inside of faring?

Good advice on covering up front fender. Doing any damage to that would be a disaster.....

Thanks.

Applying the correct torque is always a good practice. My fairing was replaced under warranty from cracked paint in the center under the windshield trim. Probably when the amp was replaced.

Nope - your windsheild actually has cut outs from the the windshiled hole down, so it simply slides off, and those guides help you slide the new one right back into place.

I agree on the over torque - a bit of blue loctite will prevent them from backing out.
