Well I got the bike back. No charge and they changed out one of the rocker boxes that was peeling.
Lost a lot of faith in the service dept with this one.
Besides missing the broken valve guide (i had to point it out to the mech);

Front fender scratched pretty good, the body guy was able to polish it out since all the scratches were in the clear coat. What pissed me off more then the scratch was the manager insinuating that the towing company did the damage. The towing company was ME.

2 broken hose clamps on the exhaust shield
Heat shield not installed correctly, vibrated through the brake pedal all the way home
Brake pedal is now damaged.
Oil film over most of the engine

Silicone sealer all over the cylinder base and cases

used a pair of pliers to remove some of the chrome bolt covers

let me drive home without a working headlight

twisted up the gas tank mount grommets and chipped one of the chrome tank mount bolts  >:(

There was something else but I don't remember

Drove it home the 15 miles and then put it up on the jack to due a thorough wash & detail.

That makes the last two times the bike was in the shop it was damaged, at least this time they put the new gas tank on while it was in.

No release to sign, at least not at the dealer. The rep did call and leave a message asking if everything was OK, haven't called him back yet.

Did I miss where was the DISSERVICE done I will personal burn any chitrs I have or make sure I never get any from them  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Glad you got it back I feel your frustration having had a simlar situation on getting my other ride back in simalr shape ONCE!

Duane, sorry to hear about the chimpanzees who worked on your bike.  I started a thread on this general topic about 6 months ago, relating to whether it's worth the hassle to bring a bike into a dealer because of the risk of, or perhaps the inevitable, collateral damage, even if they're able to fix the problem.  I service my bike myself just for that reason, and if it ever needed major work, I'd much rather pay Jim (HD-Dude) who is local to me, to either do it for me or with me.  Unfortunately, the guys (like Jim) who really know what they're doing and have the experience, patience and skill to both fix the problem and not screw something else up in the process generally don't work at the dealers, so--no warranty benefits.

I'm sure you know this anyway, but when you talk to the HD service rep, if he asks you to sign anything (like a release), tell him to go pound sand.  I don't think they'd be dumb enough to try to void your remaining warranty after the fact, and they pretty much lost any leverage once you picked up your bike, right?  (Yeah, I'm a lawyer, but please don't hold that against me--this is just friendly, as opposed to legal, advice.)

Idiots.  Makes me sick.

I really like the chimpanzees ID, jdracing.  ;D  I, like you, prefer to have my bike serviced by an independent, who does give a lick about who is coming back, reccomending to others about coming back and respecting you and your property.  The warranty issue though has you stuck....  I have a laundry list of what does not work on my bike - from new - that I won't bother with cause it is not worth the hassel of not having my bike to ride cause there waiting for parts they broke or tins that they replace cause they chipped the paint, etc.  The independent I go to taught for years in Arizona at the HD school, is a great person and very through.  I really, really wish the MoCo would allow him to do my warranty work.  If they did, I would have all my non-working parts replaced/repaired whatever, then when I talk to others about my bike, there would never be a negative things to say about non-working items.  ;)

Porthole,  I am so very glad to hear you got your bike back...... albeit a little bruised.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Ok,
I am reading this thread and feeling bad about the issues with bike and service. No one should have to go through such crap

BUT, I can't seem to make sense of the sentence  " Chowderheads makes me sick "

Chowderhead is a name that people from Maine call themselves and are proud of. To us it represents the heritage of the sea and those who live and work on it.  If I've missed something in the posts, then would someone please explain. If not, I'm gonna step up and say     " Hey don't diss me that way "

Sorry Big B, when I quoted it, and I am betting when jdracing said it, I was not referring to a "people."  I think it is pretty cool that someone makes their living off the sea, and I was thinking the reference was simply someone with a soupy brain.  Sorry, I will edit my response.  I'm all about getting along with all my sisters and brothers no matter what they ride, what they do for a living, where they live, what their color or beliefs.  Two wheels in the wind, you are my friend.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Alright Spidey, you got me.  I'm out here in California, and although clam chowder is absolutely one of my favorite dishes, along with Maine lobsters of couse, where I come from "Chowderhead" is exactly what Mrs. WeCVO identified--someone who is incapable of figuring things out, or less charitably, a slang for an idiot (in the name-calling sense).

But I learn something new everyday, and if I inadvertantly slandered my Maine brothers and sisters, especially those of the CVO variety, please know it was purely unintentional.  I was intending to insult the primates who worked on Duane's bike, not bring respected Maine/New Englanders with a proud sea heritage down to their level.  Editing my post as we speak.

Sorry about that, Bro.

Come to think of it, I may have insulted the chimpanzees too.

So, not only was the front pipe not put on right but the rear pipe too. It was resting on the primary cover (which is now marred).

What else?
Oil film over the whole engine
one side cover has scuff marks
Air cleaner has scuff marks
Both saddle bags have scratches on the bottom

there was something else but I don't remember.

Porthole-
A real neanderthal had to work on your bike.  When you had to show them the cracked valve seat in the head, that was a bad sign.  Their lack of workmanship is unacceptable even on a $2,000 bike.  Hope you can get it cleaned up where it looks and runs great again.  Good luck!

It is a pain (and more) that we have to put up with inept service.

I was at the HD shop yesterday trying to track down my SERT CD that they didn't leave in the bike as well as my NAV CD from the original install as they replaced my readio and now the NAV is in op.  I made the ovservation that they are so busy that they don't actually have time to do a good job and still get the work done for all of us standing around waiting for our rides.

This is no excuse for the crappy work or service.  They need to be better managers of time and work and do every job 100% or they won't have to worry about all the work in the future as it will be down the road.  I'm about there now with my local shop.

OK, I am even more pissed now. Not only did the rep not call me back (he called the shop wondering if I had talked to them) but after I looked at the engine I had to point out to the tech that the valve guide is cracked. [smiley=furious3.gif]

Another delay while we have to wait for that part to be ordered.

Anyway, I took a bunch of pictures and they can be seen here:

http://www.porthole2.com/porthole/photos_Rides_SEEG_bent_valve.htm

There are some obvious heat issues with the rear cylinder too. I checked the plugs frequently and they look good enough, but the back of the head has come coked up oil in the valley.

So I suggested he call back tech support, let them know that there is a bad valve guide and that probably caused the valve to stick.
BTW, there was no obvious indication that the valve hit the piston.

I was surfing last night and landed on the pictures attached to this post (Reply #36 ). I have an active imagination and when I saw “SEEG_valve_09.jpg” I felt that the photo had a lot to say. I remembered hearing that a picture is worth a thousand words, so things began to make sense.

The photo seems to be saying “HEY!!! These two valves are positioned on a collision course with each other”. (not like the valves in my Chrysler wedge.) After the 8th glass of grape juice the photo was saying “if that damn exhaust valve doesn’t get the hell out of the way during overlap, that big intake valve is going to come off of its seat and punch the exhaust right in the nose”.  After a little more of the good juice, the exhaust valve guide began jabbering “Don’t worry about that big intake bully, I’m here to support you; although I do have a little osteoporosis, I mean I’m only cast iron so don’t get too carried away or I’ll fracture into pieces”.

I was eager to hear what the valves had to say, but the intake valve wasn’t invited to the party and the photos of exhaust are not talking.

The photo had something to say about the flat top piston (ex-military).  There was something about the big oversize intake valve running interference for the smaller exhaust valve. The exhaust guide would have different (opposite) support issues to deal with as well. Everyone agreed that if the piston had become involved, the little skirmish pictured would look more like a gang-fight. The photo doesn’t seem to speak directly to the specific cause of the altercation, but my imagination seems to be covering for that.

I woke up in the middle of the night, on the floor, empty grape juice bottle, big blue-screen thing going on and thanking God that the voices had gone away.
