Fire safety tip for the 2012 grilling season L@@K!
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:38:41 AM »

Ok, this one is personal. This is about my work partner’s wife. When we work we spend 24 hours together, 8am till 8am the next day, as close to family as having blood lines.

“John” was in the garage putzing around. “Jane” was on the deck prepping dinner on the grill.
John heard what can be described as a rush or air, like an air hose, followed by a “whoosh”, followed by the blood curdling screams of his wife.

It is still undecided exactly what happened, but apparently when Jane went to change out the propane bottle, gas escaped, found an ignition source, maybe from the hot grill.

She was enveloped in a cloud of burning propane
Propane can burn in excess of 3000 degrees, so it doesn’t take much.

911 is called and there is a delay in EMS response due to an accident involving and overturned tractor trailer (with the drivers left arm pinned under the truck) and a school bus full of kids (all minor injuries).
Dispatch finally sends an engine company which happens to be the same engine John is assigned too. An ambulance finally arrives from out of town and transports Jane to the local trauma center. She is stabilized there and due to inhalation concerns she is transported to St Barnabas, probably the premier burn center in the tri state area.

Jane has 1st and 2nd degree burns over most of her exposed areas (it was summer like last week here). She was released early the next morning as there were no inhalation issues.

She got a trip to the salon to trim up her hair and has been back once to the burn center for evaluation. So far it seems there may be no debridement or grafts required. Next visit will determine the extent of her injuries.

She is lucky.

Be careful with your summer grilling!

With the early summer-like weather this year, this is a very timely reminder Duane.  Thank you.  I hope your partner's wife comes through with no lasting impairment.

Another thing folks should check before firing up the gas grill is the actual burner tubes for foreign material.  I have no idea why bugs and spiders love these things so much, but they do and they like to build nests.  This can also lead to a fire hazard.  In fact, it's best to do a complete inspection and leak test every year before firing up the grill.

That reminds me of an incident that happened when I was a kid, say about 45 years ago or so.  My mother and two other women took us boys to a remote campsite. Back then they were cooking with the old Coleman 45 degree smaller propane bottle stove when all of a sudden they exploded. Being young we had no idea of what happened, skin was hanging off my mothers arms etc.  All the women had there hair burned etc.  I remember the screaming, the odor & long recovery time and the amount of pain they went through.  I hope and pray that the woman listed heals quickly and without much pain.  I'm far from an expert but my mother being a RN frequently told me that burn injuries are like no other and the people who risk there lives as firemen deserve our outmost respect & thanks.

So this is a two fold post.
1 Prayers for the victim for a speedy recovery.
2 Thanks & respect for those that deal with this on a daily basis.

God Bless

I pray she doesn't need skin grafts.  I am going through the healing process after having that done three weeks ago.  They removed the skin from my right thigh to use on an area on the right of my leg and I can tell you that skin grafting is VERY, VERY painful.  My prayers are with her.

Prayers for your partners wife, may god's healing hand touch her. As far as propane goes thanks for the reminder, that stuff is dangerous at best.

ouch, that a painful reminder of my burnt hand from last August, I am sure she will recover just fine, but my thoughts are with her anyway.

I hope for a speedy recovery for her!
This also happened to a friend of mines BBQ.
This should serve as a reminder to everyone to replace any hard or brittle BBQ hoses

Duane,

I am sorry to hear this, I wish her a speedy recovery.

Every year these type of incidents happen and everyone should inspect the hoses and connections to their gas grills.

Quite often a house or a deck gets burned down.

Sppedy recovery and prayers for your partners wife.  Never have liked Propane.  My grill is plumbed in to natural gas, no bottles.
