Anyone know difference in voltage regulators 06-08 vs 09 and newer?

Had occasion last night to potentially need a voltage regulator for a 2012 bike.  Knew the stator is the same for 06 and up so thought the regulator might be also.  Was hoping it would as I had a spare 06-08 regulator.

Turns out regulators got a new part number beginning in 2009.  Since the stator stays the same does anyone know what the difference is?  Is it as simple as just a different shaped DC +/- plug?  Or is something else going on?
