06 cvo ultra upgrades
« on: March 27, 2012, 09:14:21 AM »

I just bought this 2006 cvo ultra with 12000 miles and I need to get it moving asap, its a bit of a dog in the performance department.
It currently has the stock touring mufflers and I have a set of the originals pipes also.
I spent a lot of time  researching the possibilities of all the upgrades and this where I am at.
I, like most am looking for that torgue in the low to mid range and I ride single most of the time, and I do like to get it "on it" off the lights, from time to time.

pipes: either Rineharts ( which I really like) or using the stock pipes with the full sac inserts ( which I haven't heard). I will keep the stock headers for now.
I have the stock Screamin eagle breather, is it ok , or should I replace it?

Cams; too many decisions, I have it narrowed down to the Zippers 575, S&S 590, or 570, Woods 555, or 777, and what about the Freedom FCC14?
I will also add the pwoer commander and do i final dynotune.
Any thoughts, advice, experience would be welcomed. Thanks

The stock cam closes the intake at 53° and you have 8.8:1 compression sure it will be a dog.
Change cams to a TW5-6R and convert the tensioners to the new Hydra chain setup
New feeling motorcycle.
Use a decent slip-on, a few I have used successfully, Fuel Moto (Jackpot), Rush, Wild Things Crusher, D&D, V&H Classic, Fullsack
Get the motor properly tuned

I have the exact same bike with 25k miles and just did what you're looking to do.  Look at some of my recent posts.

"New feeling motorcycle" is putting it lightly! ;D

Mighty easy to get that to snap to attention. :)
Several combinations will work great.

i did the same thing on my other 06 seuc.  I went with 10.5 to 1 pistons, rinhart duals, wired it up for o2 sensors and ran a tts tuner, with the woods tw 5-6 cams and hydrolic chain conversion.  It changed it alot.  Just the tuner and pipes made a big difference.  My 01 88 ultra with pipes and cams ran better than it did before the tuner.  With that set up had power in about any rpm range.  Never really had to downshift or any lugging problems.

Instead of a Power Commander and a dynotune, with an 06, you might want to take a look at the Revolution Performance EMS.  You will need O2 bungs in your headers.

o.k I am down to the zippers 575, or the YB13 cams. Any preferences? Again looking for the low to mid torque gains mostly riding single, and I do like to run her thru the gears, if you know what I mean. I will probably change over to Rineharts because I do like the sound, just not sure whether to go with the simple slipon s or the true dual route, and the power commander 111, because I already have one that will fit. Any suggestions and advice, and first hand experience appreciated.

I have had good experiences with Mackie on Shovels. I think you will like his cams.

I run the YB13 Gear Drives with the Yuill Bros Elite D exhaust & the SE air Filter, a little bit of head work, just clean up and it make 104hp / 114torq.  Love it, it runs very very well, but it's too loud for my old ears.  Later this year I will do a FullSac B XPipe with 02 sensors (requires oil pan change) and go back to the CVO Muffler cans with 2" baffles.  I actually expect I will gain both HP & Torq.

With the true duals you will be able to tune each cylinder separately . Which the correct way to tune a V twin. I have a set on my bike and love the sound and I dint think I am missing any bottom end at all. Power commander is great as well, as long as you have a tuner who is proficient at working with the PC. Direction lifters, adj push rods, and a bit of head work should be on your list as well. Cheers.

I just bought this 2006 cvo ultra ... I will also add the pwoer commander and do i final dynotune.

On an '06 a Power Commander is fine, but a TTS kit is great, especially when you add the wire and O2 sensors so you can go closed-loop.  That's almost going to be a must when E15 hits the pumps real soon.  When that happens the possible range of fuel stoichiometric AFR is going to be too great to economically yet safely tune an open-loop bike.

You could get a PC-V along with its "autotune" modules, but that cost will be higher than using the stock ECM closed-loop, and a piggyback controller is always less elegant, to say the least, than a properly-programmed stock ECM.

one station here in town has a e20 pump for flex fuel cars, and they have a all gas premium pump for old cars and motorcycles - today it was 4.169, premium 10% was 3.69 at the same pump...... if i do my math right - about 11percent more?

ive been running a test - two tanks of all gas premium and then two tanks of 10% alc premium - so far im showing 2mpg difference & it runs the same. that is 6% less fuel economy - looks like straight gas is losing

with all the pre closed loop bikes, cars, etc - in fact all cars older than 2000 they are supposed to use - straight gas premium

ewww

ill keep running my test for a month or so to try and work out the long term costs -
