HD Dealers on Road Tech GPS
« on: March 28, 2012, 01:42:09 PM »

Are the US dealers shown in the HD list on the 660 etc in the US accurately located?  A lot of those in the European one are miles away from their actual location, as if somebody has randomly shoved a point in the appropriate city.  :(

Has the US one ever been updated?

That's actually a great question.  :2vrolijk_21:
I have not noticed an issue with accuracy of plot points on my 665.

However (dealing with accuracy in general) I'll expand the question a bit. More-so an additional ask of the same question worded a bit differently ... yeah?

Does anyone know if Garmin is keeping up with "Roadtech" version of their units for H-D dealers that have closed?
If they are not - meaning there are H-D dealers listed that don't exist - then the value of the "Roadtech" series goes down a notch in my book.

Isn't that (aside from NIM functionality - because that was an add-on) why H-D did the "Roadtech" version in the first place?

You are right there, TiF2!   The premium price for the HD one over the Garmin one was supposedly in part because it contained the location of dealers, but - although it reports as V3.0 - I'm not aware of any updates ever having appeared.  And I've chased dealerships all over cities in Europe (Tallin in Estonia, Thessaloniki in Greece) by choosing them as a destination in the 660, only to discover the supposed location is miles away from the dealership, and that's NOT because the dealership has moved! The details HD give sometimes include the correct address, but that's nowhere near the coordinates in the GPS. See the example below (Thessaloniki in Greece) for what I mean, where the address for the entry is correct, but the location nowhere near.  And these "errors"  (as an aside, the old GPS built into the HK head unit was every bit as bad in this respect, and it was never updated) seem to be the rule, not the exception.

As seems to be the norm these days, the MoCo subject us to "Mushroom Management", and have some junior who is either too stupid to know how, or too lazy to care, stick pins in a city rather than get the correct location.  To get this correct for the whole of Europe would take less than a day for someone with the IQ of a plant, but HD couldn't care less - they've got our money, and how they must laugh at us for being mugs!  >:(

I ran into that same issue yesterday while riding in NW Kentucky.....going from Sturgis KY to the dealership in Paducah KY, I hit the dealership 'GO" on the gps and it was fine until I got close to I-24 and then the dealer name disappeared from my gps and then when I tried to hit 'GO' again it totally got us lost......wasn't even close to the dealer and they have been in that location for 3-4 years now...in fact the frontage road they are located on was just blank on my gps. I had even updated it within a month since I have free limetime updates, so maybe I need to do it again.

H-D Prague the same thing, not even near the location and they have been there for 10 years minimum. Just happy I didn't buy the Roadtech and just installed the dealer poi from HOG website. As crappy as the other one but for nothing ...

And St Petersburg, (and Poitiers, at least on the HK GPS system) that I know of at least, Hans.

Like you, I've got the plain old 660 (fantastic bargain - looked brand new, from ebay for around €100, but totally dead.  I'd already rung Garmin to check on their repair costs, which are fixed at around €160, so prepared for it costing me a bargain €260-ish.  When it arrived, I checked with them, and it was still under warranty, so replaced FOC!  :pepper: :pepper: ) but I have the HD supplied dealer database on it copied from a friend's road tech. Prior to that I used a POI from a website too.

It's pathetic, really.  All that money and they just don't give a fork about getting it anything close to right, on a simple job that would have taken no time at all to get right. I'm willing to bet the US one, just like the European one "V3, yeah right!" never gets updated.  It would be nice to get into the database on the Garmin to correct it, methinks.....

Was riding with friends this W/E.  Decided to swing by the Dealership in Lynchburg, VA.  My POI file that I downloaded off the web took me right to the parking lot.  My buddy's 660 that came with his '11 SEUC told him the location was another mile + down the road

Kinda confirms that the US one is no better than the European one, but at least his one had it on the same road!

Well, it appears we all have the same file - it covers the whole world, not split into US, Europe Etc.

This site here:

http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/edit/poi_manager_online-38_12.php

allows you to open it (it's a .gpi file) and fix errors.  :)  But I haven't found a way to save it back as a .gpi file yet.  If you save it as a .gpx and use poiloader, that works, but it removes the Harley Dealer icon in the "Where to" section, and becomes a custom POI.  I need to do more work on it....
