Bike Left Me Stranded
« on: April 01, 2012, 10:47:02 PM »

Was out on a ride with a friend today and my bike(2012 SESG) quit on me.  We were in the middle of nowhere and the check engine light and battery light came on. I did notice that the volt gauge showed it was not charging.  Did a quick check on the battery cables and they were tight.  Started out again and went about 5 miles and the bike just quit when  the battery had totally discharged.  A guy ended up loaning me a set of battery cables and we would charge my battery off my friends bike for a about  10 minutes and I could run about 10-12 miles and it would quit again.  Had to call my wife to come put me up off the side of the rode.  First time(had broken down) ever after 12 years of riding that I had to get someone to come get me.  Call a friend that works at the Harley shop and he told me that 12 models(touring bikes) had voltage regulators failing at a pretty high rate.  Stated they had put around 10-12 on in just the last month.  Anyone else had one go out?

Jerry (ultrafxr on the site) had one just last week.  Personally know of one other that's not a site member also.

The regulator carried the same -09 part number as the 09-11 bikes did.  Not even a new revision number.  That at least suggests nothing new about the part.  Doesn't mean something didn't happen that was either an error or a corner cut in current production though.

I stopped one Sunday to top off fuel on the way home... all day it was fine.. after I topped off, rode away from the pumps and noted check engine light and battery light.. as well as the voltmeter riding just below 12... it was late Sunday and I didnt want to chance not getting to the dealer in time.. so I rode it the 5 miles home... about 1/2 mile from the house the lights and volt meter go back to normal... I get home shut the bike off, and it does the same thing again... lights and volt,meter..  say screw it and grab a beer.

About 9 pm go out to the garage.. start bike up.. all normal again...

Short story dealer replaced regulator....

That's similar to what Jerry experienced. Come and go for a day before crapping out completely.

Wonder if the regulator grounding is the culprit? I can't believe this F%^kin sh#t is still happening after all these years. You'd think H-D would make a special grounding system just for this continuing problem. My 1980 FLH did the same thing and I'd rather not repeat the cure again like I did last time...like moved to a 6 cyl boxer engine.

The Harley shop called me today and confirmed that the voltage regulator had gone out.  It was the tech that called and said they are going out at a high rate.  I wonder if MOCO will have a recall on them.  Also understood that they are on backorder now.  What I'm wondering is are the ones that have been in parts inventory are of the same batch that was put the bikes during production.  What's scary to me is my wife has a 2012 SESG also.

For those guys getting the voltage regulator replaced it seems you have to hope it one built AFTER FEB 2012 if indeed these have corrected the still undetermined problem.  I have a 2010 SESG but still feel a bit ubeasy when I go on these 2500K plus road trips.

As Twolane said, mine went out while riding the mountains in SW Missouri / NW Arkansas the last weekend in March.  Just over 3k on bike at that time.  Happened on my '06 at about 22k so I immediately knew what the problem was.  My '07 has about 85k on it with original regulator - so go figure.  Who knows what the heck causes some to fail so soon and others to last.  Maybe they changed vendors and they weren't being made to spec.  Regardless it is a PIA when out on the road.

So now I am trying to get the moco to replace the standard black regulator with a chrome one which came on the bike and failed.  Hardly any dealers stock the chrome version, and it was on national backorder at the time mine failed.  Backorder should be cleared by now - unless of course they have extended it.  So good luck to you guys who had a failure close to home and can afford to wait a bit for the chrome version.  But if you're like me (and I know you are) you hate waiting - even if you didn't have a ride planned or couldn't ride for whatever reason.  Just the thought of being out of service pizzes me off.

HD has had this issue with weak regulators for many years. At least 15 or so.

I had this happen to me and been riding with other when it happened to them.

Not a problem if you ride with a buddy. Just put his battery in your bike, and your battery in his. That way his bike will charge your battery while you use the power of his already charged battery. Then when it gets weak again just swap back.

Either that or bring a dare voltage regulator, I used to carry one for years after the first time mine crapped out at midnight.

They had a rash of these back on the '06 SEUC (chrome version)...same thing with the manufacturing time period.  They probably changed vendors again to save money.  Instead of $5.00 a week, the new guys only make $4.00.  Unemployment is running about 10% (real numbers) in China right now.  Lots of peeps moving back to the farms to get by.
