CVO Painted parts...
« on: April 02, 2012, 06:11:32 PM »

I have a 2008 CVO Softail Springer that has the 105th Anniversary scheme of Crystal Copper and Black Onyx and includes gold leafing graphics.

I bought the Harley Spoiler that also runs and attaches under the frame rails.  It came in the primed condition and I took it and had it painted by a guy that paints a lot of custom Harley's.  I gave him the vin number and paint color (Crystal Copper) and hoped it would be an exact match.

I picked up the parts today and they are close to the Crystal Copper, but the metal flakes look like the are too deep in the color. I compared the parts to the bike and they are close to the same color as the frame, but the tins (gas tank and fenders) just seem to have the metal flake a little closer to the surface and you really get the effect in the sun.

My question is when you have a Harley color, does it give the painter the air pressure settings and how the metal flake should look?

I would have ridden the bike to the paint shop, but it is some 50 miles away and just wasn't convenient to ride and carry the parts with me.  I may need to try and remove one of the tins and drop it by the painters shop for side-by-side comparison.

Post pix when you can. I too have the 105th colors and have thought about what you have done.  Interested in seeing it.

Great looking bike.
Yeah the air pressure does have a lot to do with the metal flake. I ain't a painter. I can please myself though. LOL.
I have a couple of friends that are real painters and they say it does make a difference. they say that you have to look at the other paint and try to match it. They said something about how the matal flake will lay down or stand up. I get to talking with those guys and they get out in Left field and start throwing out stuff I do not know about. I always talk to one of them when I paint something though. They always steer me in the right direction.

I like what I'm seeing.  Does the radius front part of the lower piece line up with the frame down tubes? Was just trying to figure out how the shape of the fairing matched with the fwd controls and frame, etc.  It looks great from the pix, I guess only you could tell if there were some minor variations in the flake layout. Can't tell from the pix.  Will you post some more pix once you have it completely mounted?  Thanks in advance.

Hey,

I'm currentyly getting saddle bag covers painted to match my SESG.  I bought and returned a color matched inner faring from a guy who claimed he could color match and instead of my Spiced Rum it looked fuscia!  I did some research on matching CVO colors and this is what I found:

I know you have already spent some money but you can call Gun Slinger Custom Painting in Colorado and talk to Kent.  They custom paint for Harley and are currently painting new saddle bag lids with speakers for me.  ($550)  I sent a side cover to verify the match and he said that they will treat the parts like they were going back to Harley.

I am also getting an American legend trailer color matched and AL said that they also do custom painting for CVO parts and they actually do many of the parts for Harley and they have the codes and many of the kits for saddlebags ect. and would have gladdly painted the covers with my trailer.  They have my other side plate for color verification.  This is not cheap but both of these guys guarantee a match.

My painted parts are closer to matching the frame and oil tank, etc.  The 3 tins (fenders and fuel tank) seem to have the flake a little closer to the surface.  It cost $500 to have the 3 spoiler parts painted and the painter said the paint was the costly item.

Good info for the future, and yes paint is expensive.  Good luck.
