OIL PRESSURE

  HEY GUY'S , I HAVE A 2011 103 STREET GLIDE WITH 4300 MILES ON IT. IMHO THIS ENGINE HAS ALWAYS HAD A LOUD TOP END SENCE I BOUGHT IT NEW. I NEVER HAD ANY LOSS OF POWER , BUT THE OTHER DAY I HAD AN INCIDENT WITH MY OIL PRESSURE GAUGE. COLD PRESSURE APROX 38 IDLE , SAME AT 1300 RPM AND UP. WHEN HOT THE PRESSURE DROPED TO 32-34 1300 RPM AND UP, AND @ IDLE WILL SLOWLY DROP DOWN TO ABOUT 10-12 AND THEN SLAM TO 0. IN 85 DEG WEATHER. THIS JUST STARTED, AS I KEEP AN EYE ON ALL MY GAUGES. I KNOW THAT ITS ALL ABOUT FLOW NOT PRESSUR/ LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM, BUT THIS CONDITION WAS SUDDEN. I PULLED THE J & P LIFETIME FILTER AND FOUND NO PLASTIC TENTIONER PARTS. THE OIL WAS CLEAN AND NOT BURNT.
  I HAVE NOTICED NO CHANGE TO THE NOISE ( LIFTER CHATTER ) FROM THE ENGINE OR ENGINE RUNNING LIKE s@*$ WILE THE GAUGE IS AT 0 LBS. I BELIVE I HAVE A BAD OIL SENDING UNIT. I WILL BE PUTTING THE BIKE IN THE SHOP ON WEND. TO HAVE THIS CHECKED OUT UNDER WARRANTY ALONG WITH THE RECALL ON THE REAR LIGHT SWITCH.
  I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD PROBLEM , IS IT COMMON ?, AM I LOOKING AT POSSIBLE CRANK RUNNOUT AND PUMP FAILURE? . THIS IS MY FIRST TWIN CAM. AS I CAME OFF AN 07 ROADSTER 1200. THANKS FOR ANY FEEDBACK.

Sounds like you had no tell-tales of no oil pressure other than the display.  The only thing you or anyone else knows for sure is they don't know anything for sure until it's looked at.  Sending unit is certainly a possibility.  Will keep my finger crossed you've got a nice simple problem like a pressure sender.

I've given up looking at my oil pressure gauge.  I look for a light. Before and after my recent cam plate/pump change oil pressure when hot at idle has read damn near at 0. Though the needle is off the peg. Light has never flickered. At cruising speeds it just below 32. To be honest I see very littile pressure difference between the old pump and new one. Maybe slightly higher pressure at cruising speeds. Definitley no changes at idle. Oil pressure charactersistics between my CVO and the 95 FLHT I had before are noticable. Trying to foreget what I used to see and maintain an open mind.

suggest your dealer check for oil pump caran runout concerns while still under warranty!

Before we start changing crankshafts and oil pumps and various other stuff, I'd suggest the best idea is to follow basic diagnotic procedures and verify the gauge and sending unit operation.  There have been more than a couple sending unit failures in the past couple years, and if I remember correctly the symptoms were very similar to these.  Actual oil pressure can be easily verified by tapping a real certifed mechanics gauge into the fitting for the sending unit; Harley has such a setup in their manuals.

What you are experiencing is the same when I lost my first engine on a FLHTCUSE2 "07" at 6,140 miles. The problem lies in the oil Pump and in the oiling system. The piston skirt oil jets needs at least 20 psi to fire. When you drop below 20 psi, the engine will heat up dramatically thus thinning the oil more. it is a lose/lost situation. Unless Mother HD changed the pump since 2007, Think of looking for a better oil pump. Alternate solution for a healty engine, buy some SeaFoam. Apply it to the oil at 1 oz./ qt. used in the crank case. This will keep the oil from being blocked, anywhere. Don't worry about the crud, that is what the oil filter is for.
