2010.5 FLHTCUSE5 NIM Install
« on: April 06, 2012, 06:32:32 PM »

I want to be able to listen to the Roadtech 660 through the Aux port. The Roadtech cable under the front faring on my bike is connected to the jack that is mounted in the dash. I'll call that jack the aux jack extension.

If I follow the instructions in the 76000024A kit do I end up with a hole where the aux jack extension used to be since I have to locate the Y cable behind the dash?

Do I fit the male end of the Y cable through that hole to plug into the Aux jack?

How have others handled this?

TIA

If you want to listen to the GPS via the Auxiliary Input Port on the face of the radio then you really do not need the NIM. Just run a 3.5mm Stereo Male to 3.5mm Stereo Male cable from the Audio Output of the GPS to the Auxiliary Input Port on the radio. A 3 foot cable will do just fine and you can find them at Radio Shack.

The NIM is only good for Turn Prompts and will automatically interupt other modes of the radio for a turn prompt and then return the radio to the last mode. For instance, if you are listening to the FM radio and a turn prompt is present the NIM will mute the FM radio, let you hear the turn prompt and then return the radio to the FM station.

If you want to listen to a phone call or MP3 (XM if you have the 665 model of the GPS) then you need to do this via the Auxiliary Input. If you want to be able to talk on the phone via the GPS phone interface then you will need an H-D Bomm (www.hdbomm.com).

If you have other questions about this you can always give me a call if you like @ 302-670-6368

Jim, until reading your post above ^ I hadn't realized that the NIM only ported GPS instructions through the harness but that to play MP3s (or recorded books or any other audio) from the GPS unit the aux port was still necessary.  If that's correct I'm even less impressed with that troublesome little harness than I was to begin with.

That is correct Don.  Amazingly (oh well, I gues not really) some dealers don't understand that.  I have grown to like the NIM.  Never listened to the prompts before - even if I was on Aux listening to music from the GPS.  But it is sometimes helpful just to get a reminder about a turn.

When on trips I slave the GPS unit to the helmet via the bluetooth connection.  The voice prompts are handy sometimes.  On the red bike last year added the dash mounted Zumo 660 but did it using a Sony head unit and a Sony accessory that adds a rear aux port.  So it all comes through the bike's audio but the source selection in the radio must be for the GPS's input.  That way I do at least have MP3 or other Zumo based audio that can play all the time and be interrupted by the nav prompts.  It just hadn't occurred to me that Mother Harley would go the trouble of creating an audio interrupt harness/unit combination that didn't carry all the GPS unit's audio.  Just seems a bit stupid...

Not only was it stupid to just route GPS turn prompts Harley in there infinite wisdom decided to make the NIM so it would only work with a Harley version (Road Tech) of the Garmin 660 or 665. They excluded themselves from thousands of sales to those with other GPS's. Maybe they thought all those people with other GPS units would dump there GPS and buy not only the NIM but a new Road Tech also. :nixweiss:

Had wondered about (and not figured out) any possible rationale for making the units different from each other before also.  But trying to see logic in Mother Harley's P&A decisions is sometimes difficult.  If they were any denser they'd have thier own event horizon.

I did not ask my questions well.

The pigtail from the Roadtech (Garmin) mount contains a female plug that is bolted through the dash. Harley included a male to male short cable to connect the Aux port on the front of the radio to the Garmin pigtail female connector in the dash.

To install the NIM I have to remove the Garmin pigtail female connector and leave it behind the dash in order to install the NIM Y cable for full Garmin playability.

I have two options as I understand it:
1. Add a read Aux port to the rear of the radio where the male to male cable plugs in and plug the hole with a grommet.
2. Snake a longer male to male cable through the hole and plug it into the radio's front Aux port.

Please confirm.

Thanks,

Clyde

Clyde the answer to both questions would be Yes, you can do one or the other. as long as both the NIM and the Auxiliary input are connected to the audio output of the GPS you will be good to go.

With the NIM only porting nav instructions and all other audio being untouched it's hard to be impressed.  I'd rather add a rear aux port to the radio and play MP3s from the GPS unit on a road trip.  Less wire and no cheezy patch cord sticking out the face of the radio.

Agree about aux in rear. Hate the fugly cable snaked around to the front aux port. Only thing stopping me from the mod is warranty/ESP. If radio craps out the mod would probably result in denial of coverage.

True; and that's a time you can't really blame them.  Rip open an otherwise sealed unit.  Cut circuit traces.  Solder on the PCB.  Warranty probably doesn't survive that :P .
