Radio Reception Awful
« on: April 08, 2012, 08:45:10 PM »

2012 CVO Street Glide and my radio reception is awful. I can push scan and I only pick up two or three stations. Is this common?

I am using the stock antenna. I live 40 miles from Chicago and the car radio is good. This is on the FM channels, I have not tried the am yet.

Have you had fairing off and checked to make sure the antenna was plugged in to radio? Sounds like something isn't connected. :nixweiss:

That close to a major city with poor reception...keep us posted on what happens once the dealership checks it out.

Odds are very good that the antenna cable either isn't seated at the radio or it was damaged somewhere during assembly.  I assume you've already checked the connection at the antenna; if not make sure the cable is properly attached there as well.

I went to an under fairing hidden antenna, can't remember the name right now though.

I was getting 21 stations under the seek button with the stock antenna and it dropped to 18 with the hidden under fairing antenna.  I live in the greater St. Louis area though.

Before you take off the fairing, I would have the radio tuned in to a strong station and then undo the antenna connection at the rear and see if you drop your station.  If the station drops out, your cable is connected to the radio.  If it does not drop out or drops just a little, then there is probably a problem with the cable or antenna.

Good luck.

Let us know what you find out.

:nixweiss:   I installed the shorty (19") from Harley on my bike a couple years back and it works fine even out in the boondocks well south of Chicago.  Still picks up the same FM stations, still picks up the weatherband, etc.  I've never done a same day back to back test to compare the old super long whip that came with the bike to the new style shorter antenna's, but I don't remember the reception being significantly better from when I had the full length whip installed.  The Harley shorty was an improvement over the Freedom Cycles 13" shorty I ran for several years; that one did reduce reception compared to the whip.

My antenna cable was damaged internally right where it came around the steering head. Dealer replaced it under warranty and been fine ever since.

+1 on the new H-D hidden antenna.
I'm very pleased with it so far.
