Exhaust choices for touring model
« on: July 25, 2006, 08:45:56 AM »

My neighbor just bought an 05 ultra classic. Its a standard bike with an 88" engine. He was asking me about exhaust systems, and I have no experience with this type so I told him I would get him some opinions from guys that know his bike. He wants to get some power that he can combine with an air filter upgrade, RT and Dyno tune. He wants a good chrome pipe.

Suggestions and pictures for him would be greatky appreciated. Thank You

Lots of people on here are running the Rhineharts and love them, but they are a bit louder than some. The SE slip ons are a good option, depending on what you're looking for in sound.  I really like mine.  103Thunder has a set of those for sale, I think.

D&D with the ghost pipe is another option people are saying is a great pipe...two into one, with a "falsie" on the left side.

If he wants true duals, the Rhineharts would probably be the way to go.  There are many threads on here for different pipe configurations, and opinions/comments about the virtues of each.

tuned,

Exhaust systems are really tough to recommend, because everyone has different requirements.  For instance, does your neighbor want loud, medium, or near stock sound levels?  What about his preferences in power bands, stronger on the bottom end or the top end?  Does he prefer the look of "True Duals", or would he prefer to keep the stock headpipes?

If it were me, with an 88 incher in a bagger, I'd want the most bottom end grunt I could get.  In most cases that would be either the stock headpipes with slip-ons, or a good 2 into 1 pipe.  The D&D's with the ghost pipe, especially when they bring out the quieter baffle, look like one of the best options out there right now.  Good torque curve, excellent appearance and quality.

Probably the best suggestion you could give him is to hang out at bike shops and listen to the various pipes other folks are running.  Once he figures out what kind of sound he's looking for, it will be much easier to narrow down the choices.  JMHO

2:1's will always get you the extra power coupled with a good tune.  I did not look at the one noted above with the falsie which would have provided the "dual look".
Some do not like the single pipe look.  I opted for the SuperTrapp 2:1.  Good fit and finish, sounds much better than the stock pipes but not too loud.  You can make them louder if you want.  And I am very pleased with the performance gains
I will try to get an updated picture of the pipes.
Dyno attached only reflects the improvement after the adjustments to the existing SERT Calibration.  I had already installed the Air Cleaner and Pipes when I took it to the tuner.
I have another baseline run with just a stock set up with 87 peak HP and 90 peak TQ readings.  So picked up an extra 10 points in each category and still get good gas mileage.  I put White Brother's e-series on my Heritage with similar results but those pipes are not made anymore.

I've run Vance & Hines products and SE slip ons on previous bikes I'e owned and they've performed quite well.  Currently I have Vance & Hines Ovals on my 06 SEUC and think the performance and sound is excellent.  Your neighbor should try to attend some events like a poker run to see and hear examples of what's available and relate that to what he wants on his bike.

Also depends of how much $$ he's wanting (willing) to spend.  My $.02 is that for the money can't beat the SE slip-ons.  I've run the SE Pro Performane Slip-on (65115-98B) on two dressers including my '06 melon and like the sound and performance.

I have the Bassani True Duals with Megaphone Mufflers. These aren't loud either, but sound real good!

I started with SE Touring Mufflers with my Road King and then switched to the Samson Rolled Thunder slip-ons.  I'm running the stage-1 download on the bike.  I noticed a significant improvement in power when going to the Samsons without changing the download I had done with the SE Slip-ons.  The SE's sound very nice, traditional Harley sound, but not very loud at all.  They were a moderate increase in sound over stock.  The Samsons are quite a bit louder but at least I can hear the bike when riding in a group, I couldn't with the SE's.  The Samsons have a very unique sound but nice.

Hey Jorge which map are you running?  That's the same setup I'm running but mine is not as strong as I thought it would be on the top end as I am running map #36 from the SERT. The only difference is my bike has the 8 degree fuel injectors instead of the 25 degree which map 36 for the SERT calls for.  Wondering if this would cause it to be weaker?

I agree.  Have a bud who put the SE Touring slip-ons on his Ultra and it is almost quiet as stock.  But the SE Pro Performance slip-ons are definitely louder - but not so loud as to be objectionable.

Jorge, can you quantify how much increase in sound you have over the pipes that came on the SEUC?  10%  20%?
