Is there an aftermarket option for softail rear suspension? something a little smoother that will maintain the lowered look.

Jim,

These are supposed to give an unbelievable ride & cannot bottom out (there is no spring) I suppose they are a type of air ride. They are French, a mate of mine has a set on his heritage softail & he rekons its the best money he has ever spent. They are fully adjustable but you need a special pump to pump them up. But they do come over charged so you can let them down little by little until you reach your desired ride height. I think they are a little pricey $1400 AUD($1050 USD)

Click here to check them out!

Check out the Legend Air Ride Suspension...fully adjustable for whatever ride/height you want while sitting still, or going down the road.  Look under the Group Buy section of this forum for information.  The Group Buy is no longer available, but talk to Kevin and see what he'll do for you since you're a member of this site.
