Leather Covered Tour Pak
« on: July 26, 2006, 09:18:14 AM »

Does 06/07 leather covered tour pak have as much storage room as the previous King tour paks?  Is the leather difficult to care for?

thanks.....

I had a King tour pak for 12 years before my '06 CUSE. The '06 pak is slightly narrower and I can barely fit 2 half helmets when I have other junk in the pak. When empty, the 2 helmets fit into the leather pak with no problem, just have to be more creative/careful when stuffing in other objects. The King tour pak swallowed them up and as much other junk I could squeeze in. I think the '06 is slightly taller with the 'hump', that helps some. This has been discussed elsewhere, but the lock mechanism also takes up some space where the King pak has the latches on the outside and only a small locking mechanism intruding into the pak. If anyone has seen the '07 with the electric lock mechanism they have not reported it, so it is unknown if that system is better or worse in terms  of intrusion on interior space (not to mention the saddlebag locks). I bought a 9 1/2 " windshield and it did fit into the pak for the ride home (without the box) even though I did not think it would fit when I eye-balled it.

IMO - Definitely smaller than my old 01' Ultra but I like the look  ;) and have learned how to make do with it's size. No problems caring for it, wipes clean easy enough and put HD wax on it periodically. Only problem as others state too, is that it wrinkles or stretches with humidity but has always tightened up again with dry weather and lower humidity. The ostrich pieceon top/middle has more wrinkle problems than the leather but it too as always returned to original shape.

Definitely smaller and one friend is planning to replace his with a regular king tour pak and paint it (hopefully) to color match.  Big bucks and in my NTBHO not necessary.  Only thing I do miss is the H-D storage thingy I had put in the lid of my Ultra with king tour pak.  But if I'm on a long trip with the Mrs. we pull our Bushtec anyway so no big deal.  Solo I carry the SAC bag on the tour pak and have plenty of room.  What I do miss solo is the passenger grab rails - no good place to strap down a bag on the passenger seat.

Does anyone know if the passenger grab rails will fit the 'CUSE?

I don't think the grab rails will fit any Ultra, standard or SE due to the rear speakers.

They'll fit, you just have to "modify" the grabrail and backrest bracket arrangement.  I put a rail on her serg without too much trouble.  One came stock on my 01 Ultra.  I expect moco took it off as a cost cutting measure.

This is straight from the HD web site:

Passenger Grab Rail

Add comfort and confidence for your riding companion. Chrome-plated Handrail provides a convenient hand grip for your passenger, and a secure tie-down point for pillion-mounted touring luggage.

 91583-99

Fits '06 Electra Glide®, Street Glide™, Road King® and Road Glide® models. Does not fit Touring models with Tour-Pak® mounted rear speakers, or models equipped with Leather Saddlebags. Original Equipment on '99-'05 FLHT, FLHTC and FLHTCU models.

MSRP US $128.40

However, arcticdude may be right if you modify them.

Think you're right about the cost cutting measure.  Did not realize they "won't fit" the regular '06 Ultra but suspected not fit CUSE due to the larger speaker boxes.  But what mod did you have to make to fit the SERG?

I tried to find it without success, but I recall seeing a thread where someone relocated the passenger intercom receptacle into the left-side speaker box on an '06 CUSE. In the photo, I thought I saw a passenger grab rail. I meant to inquire about it at the time but forgot about it until I read this now. My passengers miss that, I had one on the old bike. Comes in handy for securing luggage when there is no passenger, or the passenger can raise themselves up a bit going over bumps like railroad crossings, etc. Something I will be looking into.

You're right - grab rail in the pic. My Mrs misses it too!
