If I let him pick what he wanted the first time it would of been a 1200 custom, no no no. I didn't know until late last night  that he really wanted the SB but the cost bothered him so he didn't bring it up. He has always been a fan of the Softails and Dynas and he has always been a pain to buy for because he doesn't feel right about people buying things for him, the reason he was looking at the 1200. He's 33

If you're thinking of only those three, then I'd go with the Switchback...gives him a "crossover" type motorcycle.

We go to the dealer this afternoon and we decided to also look at a 1 to 2year old SG and RG. Who knows what we'll get but the SB is still the front runner

Knowing he has very little street experiance, I'd be leaning more towards a used Honda Cruiser bike to get some experiance on, then shift over to the HD. Won't feel as bad when it falls over. Buy used, and you will probably be able to sell it for what you paid to the next person wanting to learn.

I got my son started by renting him a bike. This was the first one.

Good idea here. Do a couple of rentals on different bikes. I know it's adding to the cost buy you may find one a year old he likes that's still under warranty and you could recoup your rental fees by buying a slightly used one.

You maybe able to find a dealer that would put the rental cost toward the purchase of another bike.

Cant go anywhere on those. Maybe a street glide or a used seeg

I did a lot of touring on my old 81 FXWG, No windshield, throw-over saddlebags and now they are Rubber Mounted Engines, Great get around bike also for general riding as well, but I agree with the consensus, depends on his ability.

I wish I still had my old 81 FXWG (candy rootbeer)! I bought it new in may 1982. 0 miles & still on the showroom floor! An AMF bike! It was a good 1! It sure was alot lighter than my 2011 CVO Ultra Classic.I put alot of miles on that shovelhead, but the rubber mounted motors are alot better on the body for those long days in the saddle!

Tonight he tested the waters. He rode the SB, Slim, FLHR and a SG. I was really surprised at which one he really likes best. FLHR

Yea, Not trying to hijack the thread but since you mentioned it, I bought mine new as well, March 28,82 Black & gold, converted to dual belt right away and rode it for 18 years, hit a car with it and rebuilt it from the ground up with 93" Motor while I was healing, in 02 wife bought me a new Ultra (Delivered 20 years to the day from my WG) and the WG only got 100 miles that year so I sold it to my son in New Mexico and he rode it till the tranny let go and he sold it for what he paid me for it. Wish I would have had the money to buy her back.

Why not let him know the dollar amount that you are willing to spend then let him pick the (H-D) bike? :nixweiss: This way he'll get what he wants, most likely will enjoy the most, and cherish the most. This way whatever model he wants to start out with it will depend on your dollar amount whether it's new or used, and if it will have any modifications (done or get done) upon delivery.

I tried that with Terrie.  Wasted money on two Dyna's before I finally got her to sit on a Street Glide.  Now she's the first to tell women buyers "don't waste your money......just go straight to a Street Glide".

She got what she "thought" she wanted.  Not having any experience, she didn't know......thought a bagger was to heavy, etc.  Now she knows and she'd never consider anything without a fairing or stereo.

If an 09 or newer Street Glide isn't in the budget, I'd suggest one of these guy's SEEGs. :2vrolijk_21:
