NEED HELP WITH FRONT BRAKE PULSING PROBLEM, FLTRSE3
« on: May 04, 2012, 12:38:32 PM »

I've been reading all the posts about how Dealers are replacing the warped front rotors under warranty, but my Dealer says they aren't covered at all--normal wear item. My wifes bike has the worst pulsing I've ever seen, it only has 15K miles on it. The head bearings were loose but that had been taken care of, it helped a little but the pulsing is still very bad. One rotor has .016" variation, the other .007". Is this enough to cause such dramatic pulsing? Is there something I can do to get the Dealer to cover this under warranty---we have the extended warranty. Also, there is a howl in left or right turns, I will replace the wheel bearings per posts I've read here then check the pulsing again before I proceed further. Thanks for any help/assistance any of you can give me.

I had both my front rotors replaced due to warpage with the extended warranty......and was able to upgrade by paying the difference.

This was immediately after buying a used bike and x-ferring the warranty...got about $2000 worth of stuff done!

the howling could be from tires cupping.

good luck

I have over 50K on my 08 and they just replaced my third set of warped rotors.  The bike vibrated so much they were shocked.  They also replaced the front motor mount and the swingarm bushings, plus they installed a longer bolt for the True Track system for a test since it made the bar rest on the frame.  I had them put the original bolt back in and should have it back today.  They took out my practically new Lyndall pads for OEM's. I told them that the Lyndall's were made in the USA and the OEM' were from China, after a brief discusson they realised I was not happy so they didn't charge me for them.  Next winter I'm going with the Lyndall rotors and pads, tired of this out of spec crap.  I had a cupped front tire that howled like crazy.  To answer your question I and many others had warped rotors replaced by the dealer as it is covered by your warranty or the ESP.  I'm not sure on the tolerance they use but if one is out of spec they would replace both.  I have also seen guys get carried away with tightening the rotors to much forgetting that it is a typical floating ABS system.

Anyone have the measurements for being out of spec to help this get solved?   My guess is howling is due to a cupped tire and the pulsating is due to rotors or pads not seating properly. Check the fluid level and bleed and replace if it has not been done in awile.

Your at the right place to get the info you need,  this site and its members have helped me more than I could ever repay.

I'd swear you have the same POS dealer I have in my area. Been down the same road as you. I bought rotors somewhere else and just ate the cost.

Let them screw you if you want, but I'd suggest you contact H-D (if it's still in factory waranty) or the ESP administrator rather than the lying POS at the dealership who fed you that BS.  And .016" runout is absolutely massive; Harley claims a tolerance of up to .008" is acceptable, but the real world considers .002" or less to be good.  This is no way shape or form a "wear" issue, it's a defective part issue.

Guess I'm joining the club!  At only 6,600 miles I have recently developed a definite pulsing / chatter when applying the front brakes of my '12 cuse7.

Bike comes with the chisel custom wheels and the part number for the oem rotor is 41300019.

But I see in the P&A catalog on page 676 a different part number for Chisel floating brake rotors.  Can't tell much from the photo if these are different from the oem rotors that came on the bike.  Anyone know?

The oem rotors sure do not appear to be floating rotors so if the ones in the P&A catalog are, I definitely want them.

I agree.  I have an '09 SERG with about 10k miles and original tires.  They are cupped pretty bad, but the tread depth is still pretty good.  When I go around a sweeping turn they howl a bit.  Both directions do the same.  When I do my two lane "U" turn, I feel rumble strips on the tires.  This of course is the cupping making it feel that way.

So far I'm not overly concerned about the cupping other than the noise.  If I can get 12k miles from a set of tires, I guess that's not too bad.

I just had my dealer replace both rotors on my 2008 SERK under the extended warrantee, it cost me $50 deductible. I had to "persuade" them to call into the insurer as they first tried to convince me that this was a normal wear item. I was really helped by all the info on this forum and used that to convince them that I know this is a common problem with this bike and if he wasn't going to go after the insurer, then I would need to talk to the owner of the dealership and then direct to HD. The right disk was out .0075 and the left one was .009, of course, they said that .008 was within tolorance. I asked them to ride the bike and tell me that it was safe to continue to ride. They didn't take me up on that. While they had it apart I had them replace the disks as well, which I paid for since I do consider them a wear item (the bike only has 4500 miles on it so they were not worn much!!), but I wanted to start with a fresh set since I think the wobbly disk probably wore them unevenly. I also had had the front tire replaced since it had cupped and I also had the noise or howling when turning due to the cupping. The tire also had a rather long cut in the sidewall which was enough for me to get it replaced. Unfortunately I didn't have the tire and wheel warrenty so this was on my dime. After all this was done, the bike is now great again. Very smooth breaking and no howling by the new tire. You need to keep after them at the dealership or try another dealership, it can be done under warrenty.

After much discussion with the dealer and showing them in the ESP contract where the rotors are a covered item, they agreed to check it out. As of now, they have replaced the front wheel bearings, front tire and have approval for one rotor. They're still working on the other rotor and will check rotor mounting surface runout on the wheel next. It's been in the shop a week now.
