GPS Comparison
« on: May 08, 2012, 03:46:55 PM »

I am sure there are a number of riders on this site which use a GPS System. I am leaning toward a new Garmen Zumo but the reviews are mixed as to which one is the best.  Since I am sure that everyone has a opinion, which Garmen Zumo do you feel is the best and why.  The 550, 660 or 665.   I do  know the 550 is the oldest style and the most expensive but it does not seem to have all of the bells and whistles of the new ones.  Just looking for input

If I were purchasing today, it would be either the 660 or the 665, depending on whether I want XM and weather or not, and keeping in mind that you've got to have a subscription for each of those functions.  The weather might be a nice feature, depending on the situation.  I never leave home, other than short distance rides around town, without my GPS on the bike.  If you travel much at all, it makes life so much easier, and safer too.   :2vrolijk_21:

I have had my 550 for several years and I love it, but if I was getting a new one now I would upgrade to one of the newer models.

If you get a Zumo, be sure to get the Lifetime Updates for the maps.  The maps and associated data is updated by Garmin four times a year.

How do want to mount the unit, Ram Mount or other similiar? HD Fairing mount kit? Not sure you can mount the 550 to the inner fairing? I just ordered a 660 for my 11 CVO Streetglide and will mount it to the inner fairing to hide the wires and have a quick way to mount and dismount the unit.

I plan to mount it to my inner fairing and I think I am leaning toward the 660. I am not sure how much I would use the XM or weather feature of the 665. Additionally i am toward the unit sold by Harley Davidson. I think this unit is the same as the Garmen unit.  If I am wrong please let me know as the price through my dealership is very good at this time...

The unit is made for HD by Garmin. The HD unit has the dealerships loaded into them.

And... I believe the Roadtech, the HD version has a 2 year warranty where as the non HD version a 1 year. I went with the Roadtech for that reason.

I got lazy a long time ago and started consolidating devices.  I actually removed my Zumo 660 from my Convertible and adjusted the mount to accept my Droid Bionic and use that as the MP3 player, GPS, it can stream some of the Sirius/XM channels, etc.  It connects via bluetooth to my Scala G4.  You can cache the Google maps so that they are available in an area that has no cell service.  There are also alternative GPS apps on the phone, including one from Garmin, that can be used.

The Zumo is collecting dust on the shelf right now as it has quickly become outdated.

After looking at the 660 and 665, I went with the Zumo 220, has all the features I needed, and the smaller screen is just fine. Oh, and it's a lot cheaper....

the 550 is already discontinued in Europe, its major disadvantage is it's only mono. Apart from that it was a perfect and very sturdy device, a little big perhaps especially on bikes without fairing.

220 does not include MP3 player - otherwise it got all important features and is the smallest unit.

660 is the choice if you want to stream MP3 in stereo. But be prepared to many malfunctions and bugs - I'm on my third as of now  ::)

If you want to use the NIM only the Harley-Davidson Road Tech Zumo will do.
