2010 FLHXSE Stereo Upgrade Completed
« on: May 12, 2012, 02:18:07 PM »

OK I know you've all heard it before but I'm really proud of myself on this one.

By no means is this a TIF2 type Upgrade, but i do need to thank him for his help... Thanks Rich!!!

Stuffed in the fairing are:

Hawg Wired DCS1202 DCS Series 120W Amplifier (Fronts)
Hawg Wired ZX654-100R 6.5" - 4 Ohm Component Speakers With HW Adapter Cones
Hawg Wired STK100B Dash Tweeter Kit (Gloss Black)
Boom! Audio XM Satellite Radio Kit - (76404-06)
Overlay Harness – Non Ultra - (70169-06)
Harman/Kardon Dummy Module
Hawg Wired Steel Mesh Speaker Grills
Boom! Audio XM Satellite Radio Kit
Overlay Harness – Non Ultra
XM Antenna Bracket
J&M Fairing/Speaker Acoustic Pad
Hogtunes NCA 70.2 amp (Rears)
Mounting kit (4405-0234)

For the rears

HD Saddle Bag Lids (90200612, 90200613)
Boom! Audio Saddlebag Speaker kit (76000202)

I may be slower than most, so the project took me 1 full Sunday and 2 evenings after work to complete.
The lids we Painted by Gunslingers. Kent and the boys OVER delivered.... they are perfect! (thanks Rich for the suggestion)
It took me a few minutes to find a good balance between front and rear while riding, but i must say I think it was worth the effort. The HD rears may not be the best quality speaker... though i don't know that I'd know the difference.

Lots of volume. No booming bass but a very full, warm tone... much clearer and richer than with the fronts only.
Happy as I can be without hearing TIF2's setup; which would likely make me want to start over again. That said my set up looks and sounds great IMHO.

Once tank was removed and all wiring sent up front... this was the mess that had to be tucked in.

The HogTune Bracket to mount the Amp had to be bent and modified a bit to fit around the 6.5's

Props on a successful audio project.  Although it's not TIF2's, it's definitely noteworthy, especially with the color-matched saddlebag speaker lids HD now offers, and the HT 70.2 amp to drive the HD 2 ohm speakers.

As for the huge amount of new wiring inside the fairing, it's unfortunate that HD only offers the non-Ultra Overlay Harness, 70169-06, for those using the XM module.  That's a huge harness and unless you're adding CB/Intercom, most of the harness is just excess--and there's a lot of it.  HD offers a much better harness for adding the iPod or NIM modules, p/n 6920033; and, if all you're adding are the rear speakers, there's a Radio Harness used in lieu of the NUOH.  Both of these other harnesses are take up much less space, and are much less costly.  For those willing to a bit of research, it would be worth considering using the smaller harnesses, and supplying the needed connector to the XM module and wires to the 35 wire connector they use rather than deal with the sheer mass of the NUOH.

Sharp looking project you've completed, HDNIK--many miles of smiles with your tunes.

Thanks Carl and thanks for you help.

Yeah I love the lids. I only wish HD had them matched in my Colour, but not available in Spiced Rum for some reason. That said Gunslinger did a fab job.

Thanks for the post-install write-up and pictures.
Nice job on the install. I appreciate your mentioning about the HT bracket needing to be modified a bit to fit around 6.5" speakers - I had wondered about that.

I think your project came out GREAT and it sounds (pun fully intended :) ) as though you are happy with the results.
It's been great discussing this project with you Nick and props for such clean work!

Thanks again Rich. BTW one other thing about the bracket... It mounts with 3 screws, one at the top of the vertical brace and in the 2 lower horizontal brace holes. That brace is removed. The outboard mounting hole in the HT bracket can be bent out to allow speaker to fit in behind and using the HW cones, the holes still aligns with that speaker screw. ( not sure if you can picture that.)

The only other mod required is how the amp mounts to the bracket. There are 4 small mounting holes and hardware supplied as well as a sheet of velcro for this. With the larger diameter of the speaker... Those holes do not work. I suppose you could re-drill the bracket but I chose to use the velcro as well as the one inboard bottom hole, swiveled the amp inboard a bit to clear the speaker then used heavy zip ties to secure the other 3 corners of the amp. With that and the velcro, it's not going anywhere.

It was a bit of a challenge tucking everything in... And making sure there was slack enough not to bind steering... But I was sure to take some before pics to help me mentally mark the outer limits and then just judiciously filled every void I could.

Fun project... Had to really use you head. I can only imagine what yours was like.

great job. Rich is also assisting me in my decisions on what and how to do it.  There is nothing more satisfying when you tackle something like this that and that the results are awesome.
