I took a really small amount of gorilla glue and put it back on for good.  I thought I was going to lose it.  Just use a very small amount and you will be good to go.  :2vrolijk_21:

Lost mine on the 2011, half of the tape was missing, dealer replaced and its been fine.  Ring is cheap if you want to buy one, ~$15 or less if I remember right.

I've gone through three of them.  Damn adhesive is piss poor.  I like the gorilla glue idea.

My trim ring broke. When the dealer went to replace it, all of the paint around and under this peeled off. I did get a new tank under warranty and I am a happy camper.

Still an on-going problem since the 2007 Fxstsse.........................I to used a good glue to keep it there permanently.

Search the Springer threads for various discussions on this subject.

Mine came off today while filling the tank.  Guess I search the alternatives.  I probably do have some gorilla glue in the garage.

I was noticing the trim rings for the gas cap and the fuel gauge seem to not sit flush on the tank. Is that supposed to be normal, or is there a problem? With it not sitting flush to the surface of the tank, won't that allow water and dirt to get underneath? Has this been a warranty issue for Harley? Thanks

My $.02
When my bike was new the trim ring was level with the cap.
Even if everything is flush water dirt GAS will still get to the adhesive, I try to take extra care to not spill gas when filling, sometimes it cant be avoided when filling up, gas will eventually loosen the adhesive.  Mine is loose but not enough to do anything about yet.  I guess it would be worth a comment to the service mgr. next time at the dealer!

I dont think its a flat ring, its slightly mis-shaped to the curve or the tank, it takes a good eye to fix it back in the correct position when it eventually fall off.

Had to change mine on a '07 SERK that I damaged when fuelling. Ice6900 is correct, the ring is shaped to match the tank. Easy fit though...rotate the ring until it mates correctly with the tank, apply a strip of masking tape at any point on ring and another adjacent on the tank. Mark a straight line across both pieces of tape. Then its off with the adhesive backing, align the two lines and press....job done.
