Bill, The shaft is worn and may need to be replaced. I would completely remove and inspect it. Also the shaft of the bolt may be worn down as well allowing it to slide past the groove. I have found that once these come apart or loose a few times the only fix is to replace the parts. I also check these often as once they are a little loose the vibrations will make the problem worse over time.

In case anyone ever loses the bolt off the front inner shift arm, you can put 2 tie wraps together and hold the linkage together that way. I rode 300 miles home that way from Sturgis.

I am reluctantly agreeing with you...sadly, one would have thought the splines would be the first to give out!

I think Canuck had this too on the way to or from Sturgis.  At least I think he's the one I was talking with about it.

Nope, no chrome sunglasses. I wear prescription glasses and just use clip-ons for sunglasses.

I just happened to do a search for a loose shifter arm and came across this thread.   Toward the end someone had a good idea about placing a drop of oil between the head of the bolt ( I used a hex head bolt) and the shifter arm hole.  I was able to get a good grip on the hex head and gave it a really good tightening. Now that shifter arm is good and snug and doesn't shake all over anymore. It been like that for several years and bothered the heck out of me. You can learn so much on here. Amazing!!  :2vrolijk_21:

If anyone's interested there is a replacement for the shifter arm. Its what HD should have built.
