Do we need a vibration dampener?
« on: May 18, 2012, 03:19:49 PM »

OK, I know am hammering you with questions, but I know that if I don't ask I won't get my answers from any other place.

When I first rode the ConV , I noticed "sort" of engine vibration with pulling the throttle to 3-3.5K & even increases more & more.

Currently I have around 900 K on the bike, I always feel exhausted after getting off the bike. Vibration is transmitted through the foot boards to my calf muscle & even to my thighs. I rode different types of Touring & other lines of HD, u could notice these vibrations on idle but when on the move it is not felt, on the ConV it is the reverse.

Does that looks familiar to you or I am the only one feeling this or the bike actually need more dampening & if this is the case , is there is a solution for this ?

The Convertible is a Softail, and as such it has a solidly mounted engine instead of the rubber mounted engine in the Touring and Dyna models.  Your engine has internal chain driven balance shafts to help reduce vibration, but there is a limit to how much they can do.

That's what I was afraid to hear, I guess I have to get used to it.

Also check to make sure your floorboards are the type that isolate vibration and make sure they are free to float and don't have something wedged in them.

Welcome to the world of softails  :cucumber:

It seems so, after my last ride today I have been reading all about the counterbalanced & the rubber mounted , difference between "A" & "B" motor but in the same time my leg aches keeps on annoying me , hey dude was this your dream 30 K bike or you would get a SESG an lowered it. Have only ride like 900 Km on it & feel exhausted

Well I'm coming off a softail so I knew what to expect.  80 % of the riding I do is local and I am not a Long distance tourer due to back issues. If I spent alot of time on long trips for the same money I would bought a BMW 1600 GTL.

well to me sounds like a fitment problem  ....  maybe bars and seat  need adjustment for ya also might want to look into crash bar with foot pegs that way you can move your feet and legs around while riding

.... be sure to check drive belt ..loose belt will create viberation thru floor boards, know this from past experience

if you ever do serious motor work  i highly recommend having the motor balanced  did mine made a world  a difference

Today went back to the dealer, had the intention to try one of the softails for rent. There was a low Fatboy which I took for a ride. Ok, I felt the same "vibes" but not as strong as on mine. Some what I felt "relieved" after that , maybe since it's just my 4th day on the bike just after stepping from my VROD. Felt somewhat relaxed today on it & did n't have the usual pains that I suffered in the past days. I think if I linked the more powerful engine than the 103 on the Fatboy , what I was feeling can be explained :)

Just enjoy the vibes, man!  Remember, that the hi-way/crashbar pegs will viberate even more than the footboards/pegs as they (like a sissy bar) seem to act as a tuneing-fork on a solid mount motorcycle.  Nice looking ride.  :2vrolijk_21: spyder

Every motorcycle I have owned had some sort of vibration, yes including the BMW's. Some are better at high rpm's, some at lower rpm's.

As far as the Harley's go I found it best to have two; a softail and a bagger. My SEFB has a kind of a buz vibration when it gets over 3500 rpm, but down low it is smooth as silk and a perfect bike for around town or when it gets extreamly hot. I love this bike for short rides, hot rides, or when I just want to go for a short blast and get it out of my system. I generally ride my SEEG, the radio helps but it does not vibrate at 3500, in fact it is smooth as silk at 85mph up but at low speeds idling through town it has a thumping vibration and the bike gets hot as hell in the summer on short rides.

When I first got my fat boy I thought I could just put bags on it for long trips but would get fatigued and found the flh bikes are much better for this. Just my opinion here but I guess if one model was good for everything Harley would just have one line...

I'd try lossening the motor mounts and retorquing. Also check carefully all motor related hardwear especially around the muffler mounts. It only takes one loose bolt to allow movement to cause this type of vibration. The bolts that hold muffler to tranny are prone to loosening on some models. Good luck!  twinotter

Reo, you and I are on the same page...I love my softtail for short runs and in the heat of the summer, but the bagger is the one I'm gonna ride the other times.  Just wish I was still young enough for a knuckle chopper......but, the two I've still got will do nicely.  :-* har.  :drink: spyder
