110 Motor Pinging Constant????
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:14:42 AM »

Yesterday I rode with a bunch of guys here in Tucson and the temperature got up around 102 degrees. I have noticed lately that when I'm riding 70 plus on the freeway that BLUU constantly pings. I had only used Chevron 91 octane all day so I am sure it wasn't the fuel. Last summer even as hot as it got I hardly ever heard BLUU ping. I have about 18,000 miles on the rebuilt motor now and I have been noticing that I am getting more pinging everyday. My question is would this be a good time to clean the motor with Sea Foam and get rid of the carbon buildup? I don't have thousands of dollars to tear the motor down and rebuild it so I have to deal with what I have. Actually I have good power ranges and the motor runs strong except now for constant pinging. Would a good tune help???  What would be the best way to approach my dealer on this issue?

If you suspect carbon build up, pull the spark plugs, shine a light in and see what the top of the piston looks like.
If you suspect more, pull the heads.

Tell us about the build, compression, cams, etc.

I assume the motor is stock and is sealing well (no oil in the combustion).
Might want to check out Pima counties gas scheme, what they are adding to the gas, the blend. Octane is fine but if is highly oxygenated fuel they will ping like an SOB. They have winter blends there that are particularly poor. Worse than Phoenix which is nothing to write home about.

Lot of outfits horsing around, introducing "stuff" in their fuel these days.

DesertBear, when my 09 was stock it pinged all the time, less when I was using gas purchased in Ca. After I got rid of cat, and put in Fulsac stage 1 map with open air cleaner and 1.75 pipes pinging stopped no matter how hot outside. One of my posts mentions going thy St. George Utah last August and no pinging then either. If your motor is stock it sounds like you are running too lean. JMHO. CAHDBIKER

I'm running a SERT with a custom intake and CFR slip-ons. The motor is stock because of all the issues I had at the beginning so this motor is actually motor #3. It has been running pretty good but our temps went way up here in AZ and in 6th gear doing 75+ I can hear it pinging over the stereo. I'm thinking maybe I just need them to dyno it again??? Last summer it ran good with very little pinging. I just went out of warranty at the end of April unless they are going to extend my motor warranty because it failed at 4000 miles and at 15,000 miles. That was when they rebuilt it here in Tucson.

What changed since last summer besides the new motor?
I'm not sure, but, can't your SERT be programmed to back off timing, add fuel when knock sensing kicks in?
I rode a basically stock Street Glide across the desert last week, no pinging, knocking, anything.

If it's pinging you might have a bad batch of fuel assuming the pump/filter/injectors are ok and you don't have any airleaks in the intake. Thats where I would start.

Next who tuned the bike?

Fuel is not being refined as long as they used to, refining time is cut in half (any hear about or know anything about this?)  hi octane isnt bought as much as cheap 87 octane, so it sits in the tank awhile before putting in our toys.  i have always ran 93 here in ohio and this year im having pinging issues and poor fuel mileage. I ran octane boost on top of 93 and still had issues. NO mods at all this year.

Nothing has changed since last summer except maybe more carbon on the pistons and as you alll stated poor gas. We only have 91 octane here in Arizona but down at one of the shell stations here they have racing fuel. $7.99 gal. I have thought about a using a half gal or a gal of it. That is why I was thinking of having them tweak my tunning.

If you put a gallon of that in a 6 gallon tank, your pinging will likely go away, and you might like the way the bike runs as well.  Stock bike, a half gallon might do it.
I have had some pings with 11/1 compression and a gallon of that fixed me right up!  but it is leaded and is not good for catalytic converter or O2 sensors over time.  You can pull timing, but that takes away from performance.  Knock sensor can pull too much timing, hurt performance.  Is yours turned on?  You use that fuel and you can likely add some timing.

Also,TOrco makes an unleaded additive that some people say works better than most octane boosts

Try some Lucas Fuel Additive, until you can get it to someone for a good tune. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks you all!! I will look at a fuel additive until I can get the motor tuned. :2vrolijk_21:
