chirping noise during acceleration
« on: May 21, 2012, 09:55:18 PM »

I have a chirping noise coming from my 08 cvo springer 110 engine.  It happens only during hard acceleration and last only for a few seconds while the bike speed catches up.  If I accelerate easy there is no chirping noise. It is only while the engine is under a load of torque that I hear it.  I have checked the drive belt tension and have put a wrench or socket on just about every nut and bolt I can see to make sure they are tight.  I thought it might be the compensator so I had it replaced with the SE comp.  Sound is still there.  The engine is solid mounted to the frame as is the exhaust so it cannot be a rubber mount. I've checked the heat shields. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the primary side but can't swear to it. As usual, my dealer says they can't hear it.  I'm almost deaf and can hear it just fine.  It's starting to drive me crazy.  Sounds just like a couple of birds chirping their little beaks off only when I roll the throttle on quickly, like when passing a car. Doesn't matter which gear I'm in or at what speed (mph) i'm doing, just happens during a torquey acceleration.  Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated.

iwould suspect the drive belt. try a little dry graphite, then go for a ride to duplicate the chirping condition. If it has stopped chirping, check alignment of rear wheel and pulleys. Just my guess. FWIW  twinotter

I'm glad you brought up this subject.  I have a chirping on moderate to heavy acceleration.  To me, it sounds like the chirping noise the old VW Beetles made.  The confusing thing is, it comes and goes.  Since the service dept at the HD dealership said it's normal, I've decided to pretend it doesn't exist.   :bomb:

I hope the very smart folks here can shed some light on this.   :idea3:

dlaws01, I was wondering if you have installed a chrome inner primary cover. I had a chirping noise like you describe after I installed a Kuryakyn inner primary cover on my 95 Heritage. It would happen when I went over a bump or more often it when I had a BSR. After doing a lot of looking for loose bolts, covers etc., I noticed a small line on the middle of my drive belt. Took off the inner cover filed it down where it was hitting the belt. It is still on there and chirping is gone. I hope you find it. For those of us who have had a lot of bikes, and sensitive hearing any little extra noise that pops up quickly becomes a very irritating concern. Let us know what is is when you figure it out. On my Wife's Sporty....there was a cracked exhaust bracket, almost invisible, I finally found it when it snagged a thread in a drying towel. Spread the crack apart....noise gone. Replaced as a permanent solution.

Exhaust gasket?
Head gasket getting ready to let loose?
Either one will leave a stain after prolonged, unattended use.

Unfortunatley for me my chirping noise was a lifter skating on the cam.... bad needle bearings. Good luck

HD sells a poly lube for the drive belt. Mine did the same thing. I coated the sides of the belt and it was gone. Good luck.

Phaq2 has it right or could be a loose leaking ACR, head gasket would miss and make the sound.

Mine was from the heat shields on the exhaust rubbing.

I had this same situation on my 08 Wide Glide with the 96 unmodified...  just yesterday our temperatures up here got near 70 degrees and upon a little cage dodging out on the highway, the CVO chirped a little under hard acceleration.

In the past, I was told by all of the Harley riders up here and the Shop, that it was simply the engine getting a little warm and it was the automatic tensioning lifters (?) that were adjusting to the new temps.

Out on the open road, no problems... but having to run at 35mph for about 15min to get off post, and then merge into the 55mph highway, I get a little chirp the first couple of times and then it goes away once air gets to moving over the engine.

Hope this helps... and also hope that I haven't been told a bunch of bologna.   8)
