MOCO oil temperature gauge quit-help please
« on: July 31, 2006, 09:19:09 PM »

I installed the HD oil temperature gauge kit on my SEEG2 myself about 1500 miles ago and has worked fine until today.

it may not be easy to do this but, with an ohm meter check resistance across the two pins from the sender. then run the bike for a few minutes and check it again if you dont see any change in resistance that may indicate the sender is bad

you can do the same test at the guage plug checking resistance from signal to ground if you see a continues change as the bike warms up then i'd say the guage is bad

Boatman,

I haven't seen any tech literature on this gauge, but I would assume it is set up similar to the air temp gauge. The gauge receives 12V any time the ignition is on.

Thanks Naitram and Jerry for the insight.  This is what I have done (correctly?) this morning after reading your replies.
1)  It is hard to gain access to the sender pins since they are recessed and small.  I touched both prongs with the ohm leads (stayed at 1) and then touched ground lead to sender body and then touched each prong seperately and stayed at 1.  This is with engine at operating temp..  Haven't done cold yet.

2)  Touched sender connector ground terminal with one lead and other to frame and went to zero so I have a ground.

3)  Set meter to volts, turned ignition on, touched plug signal hot wire with one lead and other to ground and read 6.37 volts.

Should I actually have 12V or is my sender bad?

Many thanks.

the sender works on resisctance through ground, theres no voltage there. as Jerry said the key is the difference in reading before and after running

this is data from testing my Auto-meter guage/sender

104F = 5844 ohm
113F = 4768 ohm
122F = 3911 ohm
203F = 826 ohm
212F = 710 ohm

again this is NOT an h-d sender but it gives you an idea

I have only a one ride experience with my new "rain Gauge" but it was running in the 200 range with the air vents open and an outside temp of 68-70 F.

My dealer took a sender out of a kit and gave me it to try but still doesn't work.  You can't probe the fine prongs with the sender in the oil pan and I didn't want to cut the wires at the plug and go that route of testing.  Once the sender was out and cold, both the old and new sensors ohmed about 7 when both terminals were probed.  Road bike about 8 miles with no temp rise. The oil dipstick gauge read 210 degrees.
With ignition off, the needle goes down to the needle rest.  When ignition on it comes up to the 110 mark and stays there.  (It has been this way since new-just stopped reading above 110 yesterday)..
Any more suggestions??   I'd rather taking a whipping than have to change out the gauge in the dash.   Air temp gauge wasn't so bad after all.
Many thanks!

Jerry-
Did not see your response before typing.  When I ground hot wire on sensor plug, the gauge goes down instead of full hot.  (I thought it should do that too).  Gauge most have died.  Thanks.

Boatman, not that Jerry needs any affirmation from me, but after reading all of this there's virtually no doubt that the gauge itself has failed--sorry about that.  I've got the same setup with about 700 miles on mine--hope this is not a chronic defect.

You do have to wonder about the QC that might be exercised over a relatively small production run that, in itself, seems to have been spread among at least three different suppliers.

That woud be funny in so many ways  ;D

Hey, I wonder if you'll even get one that matches what you got the first time!  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
