The old scooter is no more
« on: May 23, 2012, 11:05:08 PM »

 :bigcry:

On my way back home from St. Louis after joining with Run For The Wall in Junction City, I wanted to visit my Niece in Fayette Mo.

I made a wrong turn and ended up on 87 hwy instead of 5 hwy.  (I had been there once in the cage) I realized my mistake after a couple of miles and looked for a safe place to check my map. I came to the junction of 87 and Z and went straight onto Z. Between the curve and straight there was a gravel connecting road, so I pulled just off the pavement onto the gravel still heading West. I waited for a truck to pass me, swung off the bike and as I was reaching for the map, I heard the squealing of tires and saw a car SLIDING at me. I made one step back (jumped?) just as the car hit the front of the scooter. I heard a big GRUNCH and the scooter dissapeared and the car slid past me.
The tour pack and the saddlebags exploded and all of the gear was scattered over the roadway. As the car slid past me it struck my forearm and gave me a scrape on my arm.

I think I like car rash better than road rash-no gravel.

Time to start looking for another scooter, the frame is crushed and the front motor mount boss is broken off the cases.

The kid driving the car said that he was forced off the road by the truck and he panicked and locked the brakes. He left about 100 feet of skid marks and slid 20 ft after hitting the scooter. The impact knocked the scooter about 40-50 feet.

At 134,000 miles, it was just getting broken in well.

Sad to hear about your bike.  I'm sure she's partyin in motorcycle heaven right now.    :ons_5: :ons_1: :wings:  The good news is, you'll live to ride another day, with barely a scratch.

Having a close call like that just reminds us to make the most of life, and make each day count.  Here's to many, many more miles!  :drink:

What a different outcome this would have been if you were sitting on your motorcycle.  Thank goodness you only received a scrape on your arm.

Wow! You were incredibly lucky, just a few seconds difference could have been disastrous!
