stero cutting in and out
« on: May 24, 2012, 02:29:03 PM »

Hello everyone, I have a 2011 CVO Roadglide with the H-K stero system, the problem is that it cuts out quite a bit when riding. Sometimes it cuts out for once a song or sometimes 5 times a song, other times it plays find for hours on end. Especially when I bring it in to address the problem, it never cuts out. I have had all the connections checked, the stero replaced, the amp replaced and still the same problem. The other day it cut out for over 250 miles than played fine for the next 175 miles. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I know several of the 11 Street Glides had cutting out issues casued by bad amps.  I have heard of any issues with the road glides, but its probably the same amp.

I experienced a similar problem on my '11 sergu. I realized that the CB radio was on and the squelch set so that any intermittant reception or noise on the CB would interrupt the stereo. Turning off the CB resolved the problem for me.

If it's not any of the components, it's possible there is a problem in the wiring harness(es) that is aggravated by the movements of riding.  Does the head unit lose power (display goes blank) when the cut-outs occur?

Thanks for the reply, the head unit does not lose power and the duration of the time that it goes out is a steady 5 seconds, it then picks up as is the song was playing. I have replaced the head unit and the amp.

Mine does the exact same thing - started last week, only change I had done was signing up for XM - mine started at 3k miles.  Going to try a couple of things, if they do not work will return to dealer, let me know if you find something - I'll update as well.....

Does it cut out in all modes? (XM, Ipod, FM) or just in one particular mode?

Is there a NIM module in the system??

On the 2011 SERGU, yes, there is, and you may very well be on to something there.

The early versions of the NIM (Navigation Interface Module) were known to be defective, and could definitely be the cause if you are not losing the display on the unit.  The new and improved NIM part number ends with an "A".  The NIM interupts whatever is going on in the radio to give GPS directions audibly.  That would be the next thing to check, IMO.

I appreciate the input, mine does exactly what donion's does, unit stays on, sound cuts out for four - five seconds, and returns, does it on - AM,FM, XM, iPod, everything, I have checked CB, Intercom, Navagation, checked all wiring opened and re-sealed everything, you will think it's gone but it returns, I have even re-programmed the Nano, shut down the radio function, the shake function etc.  - with all of that I'm thinking you're explanation is most likely the culprit....

Be sure you do not have the weather alert activated.
We've had alot of calls lately regarding cutouts that turned out to be the weather alert activating.
Recent storms in many parts of the country have trigger the alerts and will certainly sound like sound cutting out if your WB is set to a dead channel.

Just proves you learn something every day...I did not know about that function on the radio.   :2vrolijk_21: The only time I've ever had it on the WB was during a rain storm I was riding in.
