Tour Pak Removal
« on: May 25, 2012, 07:36:41 PM »

What needs to be done to make my tour pak removable?  It appears the stereo amp is mounted on the underside.  I want the ability to put it on and off as easy as possible.  Thanks.

I just removed my leather tourpak on my 06 CVO for more of a Streetglide look. The dealership told me that the radio/CD player would still work without the amp, WRONG. I installed the quick release tourpak kit from HD, and relocated my old amp in the right saddlebag. Rerouting of the wire harness was no big deal, just had to notch the inside of my saddlebag less than an inch. I may upgrade the speakers in the fairing. I've been told that is worth the $$$$$$$$$. Quick release mounting isnt labor intensive. All is working well. Good Luck!

I bought a SG 'cause it's easier to add a TP to it than make an Ultra's removable.

re:  The dealership told me that the radio/CD player would still work without the amp, WRONG.  ???

I installed the quick detach kit and took off the amp with the stock tp rail.  The radio/cd/xm all work fine.  (haven't tried the cd yet but if the radio works then the cd which is part of it will get power too.)  The amp only powers the speakers.  I'm curious why yours doesn't work without the amp Sputnik.

The process to install the tp qd kit is not hard at all.  Hardest part is cable management.

TP: Only 4 bolts hold the tp on.  All you got to do is remove the liner, disconnect cables and back them out, then the tp comes right off.  Took me all of 20 minutes to get the tp off.  Spent more time placing towels to protect the fender.  The bracket that comes with the kit to go on the bottom goes on in about 10 minutes (if you take a break for a beer).

4 point detach kit:  Remove saddlebags, remove leftover stock tp rail, install kit, no biggie.  (eyeball the kit parts when you realize the instructions are a bit confusing, then it will be obvious how it all goes together.)

Antenna reloc:  piece of cake.  No explanation needed.

I didn't bother with relocating the amp or splicing in the qd harness (extra, which I didn't get anyway).  Lots of folks buy aftermarket amp to go in fairing, some mount or even just leave it loose in the saddlebag with a small mod to allow the bag to close tight.  I always use earbuds for the best sound quality and to minimize road noise.  I can't figure the addition of all the speakers anyway, seems like overkill unless you want the guy in the car next to you to hear it too.

It's def worth it Sixgun.  You still have the added value of the Ultra over the SG and you can put the tp back on in about 15 minutes or less.  All you have to do is take off the seat, pop on the tp, connect the cables, put the seat back on, ride.

Oh, ditch the license plate remount from the kit and get a curved/lit one to go under the tail lamp, you will like the way it looks.

Imo you have more value in the Ultra with the tp qd kit vs. the SG with added tp, since the retail is 5k apart.  You can always count on the added value of the Ultra over the SG when/if you ever sell it.

Here's a pic of my '11.5 CVO Ultra.  Since the pic was taken I added a Stealth Luggage Rack.  Highly recommended.

Oh, one last tip:  There is a piece of paint armor applied on the fender under the amp.  I would leave it on there.  It's hardly noticeable and offers some protection when removing or putting the tp back on.
