Metal Dragon 30t Solution
« on: May 30, 2012, 12:29:07 AM »

I asked Jim at Metal Dragon in Hayward, CA (510-885-9471) to install a 30t sprocket a little while ago, and just want to share those results.  There was a thread started by Steve (owner of Fullsac) regarding modifying the swingarm and using the stock belt.  cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=67516.0   I played the guinea pig, and was Jim's first victim in letting him modify the swingarm to keep the stock belt.  As usual, Jim did a great job.   :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Jim's approach was quite a bit more subtle than Steve's.  He wrapped a C shaped gusset around the back end and bottom of the swingarm, and welded it in place.  Then he ground about 2mm out of the back of the axle slot, and painted it to match the swingarm.  That's it.  It was so subtle that I initially thought Jim decided not to reinforce the swingarm at all.

This modification gave a boost in performance almost as much as replacing the pipe and installing a fuel controller.  No loss in mpg on long trips, and passing semis in 6th gear is easier.  Probably the best bang for the buck mod available, and you don't void any warranty.  Oh, yeah, HD sprocket and belt, and a couple hours of labor are the only costs.

Sorry for the poor pic quality, my lens was smeared.

This is the left side, looking from the ground up.

Right side, looking at the rear and bottom of the swingarm.

As an added bonus, Jim replaced the inner primary with a chromed one.  I hadn't even thought about doing this, but I really like it.  :love_1: :love_1:

(Disclaimer:  Yes, folks, that is a skull horn cover!  :'(  A friend and I were laughing about chrome mods one night, and decided EVERY HARLEY MUST HAVE A SKULL attached somewhere.  Well, I am not happy with it.  It's kinda tacky and doesn't really go with the bike.   Since I paid good money for it, I'm forcing myself to live with it.)

Did you think about selling it?

Interestingly......I don't recall any of my bikes ever having a skull on them.  But then I've only been riding 40-somethin years. :nixweiss:

Lemme guess .... there was alcohol involved? :beerchug: :drink: :huepfenlol2:

It'd definitely look more at home on a '12 SERG.

There might have been a little alcohol involved during the discussion, ;) but I still have no excuse;  I was stone cold sober when I bought the thing.  :'(

I've thought about selling it, but it has a much better horn than stock.  That's a must on SoCal freeways.

It would look better on a '12 SERG or a Convertible... Anyone?  Beuller?
