My long-term project:
« on: May 30, 2012, 01:52:38 PM »

No, it's not a CVO, but some of you might appriciate it.  My parents bought it in '72, and I rode this bike while still in my mom's belly.

(edit)...It's a '65.  Last year panhead, first year electric start*.

The tranny sucumbed to abuse by my dad around '80, and it sat until he commissioned a restoration in '93.  Unfortunately, he passed away at the end of that year.  I chose to continue the job, but the gentleman who was supposed to do it had health issues not uncommon in a person of his age.  He was able to tear it down and that's about it.

Fearing the worst (and rightly so), I chose to bring it home in two truckloads around 2000.  A little here and a little there and here we are.  There's a lot more to the story from 2000-present, but it's not very exciting, rather mostly frustrating.

Without further ado:

You certainly live near the best city in the USA to find parts....Davenport.  I'm originally from a little town about 75 miles South of you, Macomb, IL.  Glad you were able to retain your Dad's '65.  My Uncle was the original owner of my '56.

I'd be interested in your stories since year 2000.

Very nice bike  :2vrolijk_21:   I remember growing up, I was around 10 then, our neighbor had a gold/white 62 he used to park in in house.   Once a week he would pull it for a ride and all us neighborhood kids would surround him while he went threw his starting routine.... I can remember saying to myself, "someday I'm gonina have one of those" .. Well, of course my dreams came true, but I don't have a bunch of neighborhood kids watching me strating up my Harley.   :-X...
There is somthing special about those older bikes that grap your attention, and even to this day.. :2vrolijk_21:

It was a long time ago for me too, but my dad had friends with FLH's in that time span.

I remember, pumping the throttle once or twice, pulling the choke, cranking the kick through a couple times, retarding the spark with the left hand twist grip, turning on the switch and then hoping you don't get your knee kicked back up in your gut when you kick the chit out it.

Aaaaah, the good old days.  Well maybe not so good compared to the new fuel injected bikes, turn the switch and press the start button and ride away.  What a great concept!!!!

Thanks for all the kind words.

I had my fill of kickstarting my old shovel.  It's a good thing that this is the only year for a push-button pan!  8)
