cam noice @60,000 miles
« on: May 31, 2012, 12:32:49 PM »

Just dropped off the SERK07 ,  Noise from right side of cams. Sounds like chirping. Looked for a bird but no luck.  The tech is opening it up right now. Glad I bought the extra 5 years insurance. Saved me over 7000.00 already plus this new issue.     Billy     Anyone else have this issue?

Good for the coverage.  But good lord.... seriously.  How can anyone be at all sanguine with a repair history that's required seven grand worth of work in five years and may still have a major engine repair in front of it.

Lifter roller worn, Cam worn. They will install ajustable rods , new bearings, Worn cam shoes. and maybe a few more parts. They are suggesting that I have had many problems with bearings worn out in trans and engine. Maybe it is Amsoil.   I don't think so, I ride the bike very easy all the time. Hard to want a new bike with all the trouble. My wife 05 low rider has 70,000 with no trouble.  Anyone have any ides on the Amsoil?  Anything else I should replace? Thanks Billy

Don't let them mess with you with regard to your choice of oil.  The problem is all the cheap parts they used in 2007, not your choice of oil.

When a manufacturer comes out with a new or "updated" design that has cost reduction as one of it's big goals, like the changes Harley made in '07 on both the engines and the trans ('06 on Dyna's), they often have multitudes of problems.  Harley most assuredly did, with primary failures, crank failures, and some amount of trans bearing failures as well.  None of that had anything to do with what brand of motor oil folks were using.

It is not the oil, and that is coming from a non-fan of Amsoil.

It seems to me that it is usually the front cylinder exhaust inner cam bearing or lifter roller that fails. ihave seen this on bikes from 2003 on up to the 2010's. Not too many 2011's or 12's having problems yet I assume because of fewer miles or not modified as much. But not all I have seen were on modded bikes. Some were completely stock 103 CVO bikes.

My 2010 with 51000 miles is setting in Dock's in St Louis with motor completely removed waiting on ESP to decide new motor or rebuild it. when they toke it apart looks like it started with front lifter roller  :'(
the worst part was having to fly home and just leave it there >:(

Not the oil.  Jerry's right......the MoCo lowers the specs and tolerances and things fail at a higher rate.  The MoCo should be increasing specs and tolerances.

Did the dealership say what your crank runout is?  Did they measure it on both sides?
