A slight interruption to the riding season
« on: June 05, 2012, 08:30:02 PM »

Feeling a bit lucky that I saw this before something bad happened....

The slice is to the cords...  I don't recall running over anything, but must have...

Was just a matter of time till that tire failed.
I'm just glad you caught it before it failed at speed.

Just this morning was running hand over the available portions of the rear tire while checking inflation the SERG and found a large screw.  Hope we all remember to eyeball them regularly and feel them up with some frequency.  Due diligence can save your bacon.

Me too!  Most of my riding is two up pulling the Bushtec, so the rear tire gets a regular workout...  Monday we rode home from the cabin in Northern Wi. in gusty wind and intermittent downpours - in Memorial Day traffic.  It was an adventurous ride as it was - no "extra" excitement was desired...

I was cleaning the bike up after the weekend up north.  The bike was in the air - and while cleaning the rear wheel I grabbed the tire to rotate the wheel and felt the missing chunk.  Dumb luck - could easily have missed it.   ???

Spot like that is harder to just see.  Unlike a bulge or a foreign object there's not much contrast.  I like to put hands on all I can reach with each inflation.  Some of the stuff you just have to feel.

Mine was fine but a little thin in the middle when we left for Red River over Memorial Day. By the time we got to Sante Fe it had splits in the tread similar to yours but almost all the way around the tire with the cords showing. Sante Fe HD got me in and out on Sunday morning pretty quick. I'm not real impressed with the Dunlop's on the newer bikes. Would really have sucked to be stuck 700 miles from home.

Yikes!  Good catch, Scott! :o

Besides checking them out real close during a cleaning like that, make a habit out of glancing at your tires whenever you walk up to your bike in a parking lot or even in your own garage or driveway.  I found a screw sticking out of mine once that way.  It just happened to be showing on the part of the tire that was visible.  I've also noticed other folks tires under-inflated doing the same to their bikes.  Can't ever be too anal about motorcycle tires!

This reminds me of this old thread I started sometime last year.

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=69751.0

I ran Metzlers on my old bike and liked them. They were also installed on my current bike when I got it. I like the way the tires run, handle and stick. I just don't like seeing these pictures. Some folks have run them for years with no problems. Those are the riders you hardly hear from. Other riders who have had problem tires have posted about them with pictures. The ones on my last bike started cracking on the sidewalls so I replaced them with Avons. There is also the whole debate about German made or Brazillian made.

Damn good tires, I just don't like seeing those photos.

As probably not enough, I give both tires a through examine during my 3000 mile oil changes, (I'm still one of those dynasor guys) and over 17 years riding Harley's never encounterd any problems during the inspections. (boy I didn't realize how old my lift is) During the same 17 years I've encounter one flat and that came by riding through a new home construction area searching for a new home back in 1999. I picked up about 3 roofing nails and heard the 'tap, tap, tap before I got out. I will say experiencing a flat, especially the rear is a big PITA on a motorcycle.
While on this subject, I'm curious how often you guys/gals check your tire pressure...   That probably should be on another thread, but I betza answers would startle most of us,  especially the safety conscious ones  :'(

For what it's worth, I always get the German made Metzlers.  And I'm religious about checking tire pressures.  Given most my mileage is relatively long distance, I always check pressures prior to and during the trips.  This tire was still at proper air pressure when I removed it.

It's 300 miles one way to our place up north, and we do that trip fairly regularly during the riding season.  And our trips west are typically 3000 to 5000 miles in duration.  This is my first failure.  Whether I ran over something - or the tire just failed - I don't know...  This tire had about 8k on it, and as I've said, mostly riding two up pulling the Bushtec, probably averaging 75/80 mph.

Glad you caught it before something bad happened.  Must admit they get checked pretty well during a cleaning, but not much between.  Of course you could pick something like that up right after inspecting.  Karma is with you.  ;D
