BREAK IN OIL ???
« on: June 05, 2012, 10:57:14 PM »

Have ran synthetic since new. 19000 miles, new pistons, cams, lifters. Should I use Regular oil for break in or stay with synthetic. I am using amzoil currently. My dealer said my original rings never seated properly so it really has me wondering. I see where Amzoil makes a 30 wt break in oil but don' know if it is suitable for a Harley. I have sent a message to Amzoil but no answer yet. Anyone have suggestions?

we`ve always (for 30 years +) used regular oil for the first 1000 miles of any rebuild/new motor.there are more parts that need to break in besides just the rings, all bearings & bushings must "seat" too.we were sponsored by AMSOIL with our nitro bike (LUCAS is sponsoring us now),but we had very good results with amsoil (BTW,we have 20/50 AMSOIL for 8.95/QT if bought by the case)

Many new cars Corvettes, BMW and others come with syn oil from the factory, I think the CVO do also. I think it a matter of personal preference. I don't know that syn oil is any more slippery that dino oil, it just doesn't break down as easily as dino, so it hold it's viscosity longer. I could be wrong, just what I've read.

My personal preference with my 2008 is dynasore oils for break in AND every day riding.  My oil is changed every 2500-3000 miles along with filter.  Never exceeded 280 degrees and avg around 230-240. Don't know why but my wife's 2004 SE has always  ran much cooler, about 195-205 with same oils    :nixweiss:

I have often wondered at this debate also because all 3 of my CVO's came with Syn 3 and all my other Harley's with the dino oil.  I remember on the non CVO's that the service manager would say don't run synthetic until after the break in but that always seemed contradictory to the CVO's break in oil.  I think it really doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter.  This has been beaten to death, and it is unlikely that starting one more thread to beat on the subject a little more will change anything.

The days of true break-in oils are far in the past, along with whale oil lamps to light your home and other obsolete technology.  Join the modern world.

Again it's a personal choice, I have read many papers on the difference between Syn and dino oil. To me I can see many reasons to use syn oil over dino. A few that stand out to me, dino oil has organic compounds that cause wax to build up, form acids in your motor and contribute to sludge. Dino oil can start to loosing significant viscosity with in 300-500 miles. Syn flows better then dino at cold temps. If you Google syn vs regular oil you can read some good info on the differences, you don't need to look at the oil company sites if you don't want, but good independent info is out there. Below is a link to the Oil Bible, more info on oil then you'll ever want to know and a section on syn vs dino.

IMO, the rings not seating has more to do with the way it's run the first 50 miles than what kind of oil is used.  The oil being "too slick" has nothing to do with it, as there is no such thing as "too slick".

And there is absolutely, positively, no reason to change oil in a HD more often than every 5K miles, unless you constantly ride in traffic, on dirt roads, or for very short distances where the engine does not get up to full operating temperature.  The shorter interval changes are a hold over from YEARS ago, when even dino oil was no where near as good as it is today.

But, there are as many opinions about these subjects as there are on religion, so to each his/her own...

My Jetta(sold), Jeep GC 3.0 CRD, and the new Ruby all came with synthetic from the factory. All is good with the cages.....time will tell with the Ruby.

Opinions are like a**holes for sure...they are everywhere. (old saying)

I appreciate those of you who have taken the time to respond with your thoughts. Was not trying to start anythig but rather learn from those with more experience than me.

Here's another opinion... I think that dino oil is really only still made because it's cheaper than synthetic, and there is a market for lower-priced oil, too. Synthetic is better in every way...
