How to remove a stripped screw on Ultra windshield?
« on: June 06, 2012, 04:22:50 PM »

I made the mistake of helping a friend put an Ipod adapter on his radio a month ago. He has an Ultra. Now he doesn't get radio reception. We were going to pull the fairing and check the connection. I put the screwdriver on one of the three screws for the windshield part of the fairing and felt it twist in place. Oh Boy!
Is there a way to get the screw out?  All the rest of the fairing screws come out.

Should be able to pull the fairing and the windshield and screw will come with it.  It appears you have stripped the brass insert that the 3rd screw is in.  Be very carefull and while pulling the fairing have some one turn the screw, should come out with the insert attached.

Good Luck

The little brass or bronze inserts lose their holding power in the fairing. To get one out thats turning i would take all the others out them turn that last one while pulling the outer off. Once off just epoxy it back into place keeping threads clean with vaseline or something. Ive had to epoxy a couple over the years

Sounds like the well nut that the screw goes into may have separated from the fairing.

Probably have to use needle nose pliers and pull the screw and well nut out all at once.

There is a replacement part from the dealer but I don't have the part number with me. I've heard of others using a well nut they purchased for various hardware stores as well.

This is kind of a common problem. Had a couple of them on the other bike I had to replace due to me over tightening the screw. Every had to use some JB Weld on one to keep it in place.

Trade it in on a RoadGlide.

Once it gets loose in the fairing, jutst pull out the screw with the insert. No big deal. Just epoxy it back in an et dry overnight. Keep the screw in it whie you line it back up.  Good as new when you're done.

If its spinning freely no matter what, take a 1/8 th drill bit and drill the center of the button head a little past the depth of button head of the bolt, if bolt spins while drilling have a second hand hold the sides of the button head with a small pair of needle nose. After drilling through with the 1/8 th step up to a 1/4 inch bit and CAREFULLY drill through until the button heads pops off. Now you remove the fairing and deal with brass do-daddy. You can buy a replacement fixit kit from Harley, or as others suggested JB weld repair what you got  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'm sure one of them will work.  Moral of the story: don't touch a friends bike
