Weird engine noise and stumped.
« on: June 07, 2012, 10:12:17 PM »

Have a 06 seuc 103 cvo.  Was having some valve train noise lately and had a wild hair and ended up redoing the whole motor.  Now for some reason the noise is louder, and doesn't sound healthy at all.  Was just a faint normal noise before. Sounds kinda like metal to metal of some sort.  I even took a scope camera and went in the cylinders to see if i could find anything but couldn't see any scratches or marks anywhere. If i listen to the motor running its mostly coming from the front exhaust valve, and a little from the rear exhaust.  Can't really tell any noise from the cylinders or anywhere else.  I put in new pistons, lapped the valves and put new seals on them and nothing looked wrong.  I have a set of woods tw5-6 cams and woods lifters also.  I have tried messing with the pushrod adjustment but doesn't matter which way i go with them it doesn't change the sound any.  I am kinda stumped here.  Not sure what else i can look for other than just tearing down the motor again.  I even clearanced out the rocker boxes so the springs weren't touching anywhere in there.  Any one have any other ideas what else to check?

Check for exhaust leaks at the heads...you'd be surprised how much a leak there can sound metallic.  It sounds like you've looked at most of the obvious potential causes...  (You're sure the piston/cylinder clearances are correct?)

A cheap stethoscope can help isolate noises...

I have checked for exhaust leaks.  Of all things i have never had a twin cam have an exhaust leak.  But i used some james gaskets and both the front and rear exhaust were leaking before.  I use a 5/16" hose rather than a stethascope to listen to the motor.  i have no air leaks anywhere now.

My piston clearance is good also.  measured that before i put everything together and clayed the heads.  Thats why i am stumped.  Nothing was changed but now its making noise.  only thing i am thinking now is swap out the cams and see what that does.  Have the stock cams and a set of zippers 575 gear drive set.

check all mounts,ex covers & stuff, may not even be in the motor.ive had customers chase noises and they bring the bike in and it turns out to be loose/worn motor mount (or whatever)

thanks guys.  This motor doesn't have the acr.  Before i did the motor i replaces the motor mounts with the glide pro and redid the ones in the swing arm also.  I had a shifter seal leak on the tranny and just decided to redo the whole bike.  I think i have checked all the covers and stuff.  I searched forever once on a weird noise and it was the kickstand touching the frame.  Its crazy what things can make noises.

Pull the oil filter and cut it open. If there is any metal in it see if it is magnetic or not. This should narrow down where to look. Go from there. if no metal, you can start looking somewhere else.

You're sure the compensator nut is torqued down...I'm sure you've checked that, but sometimes we all miss the obvious.  And I'm sure you replaced the cam chain tensioners with either new shoes or the newer hydraulic version?

The comp nut is torqued.  Actually did it twice when i put the primary back on. When i pulled the primary apart actually thought maybe thats where i was getting alittle bit of my noise before.   I have the new hydrolic style tensioners for the cams.  i did pull the cam cover off and checked the shoes.  They still look almost new with 20k miles on them.  Only thing i didn't do in there was pull the cams out.  Looked at them from the top and didn't see anything.  But i guess i could of missed something.

I had a knock that drove me nuts...rear brake lever versus front exhaust, only after it got hot...found via the old mirror and flashlight trick...good luck..or option 2, go beat the daylights out of it and see if whats making the noise breaks...kidding... ::)

Ha I have rineharts on mine and had to do some work on the brake pedal and shields when i put them on so they didn't touch myself.  And i really have thought about riding the crap out of it till something breaks so i don't have to look anymore.  Only have 130 miles on it now.  Even redid the front end with mono tubes and put ohlins shocks on the rear yesterday and haven't really got to test either of those out that much.

There was no sign of rockers hitting the valve covers when you pulled it apart?

Those engine scopes make a fly spec look like the Rocky Mountains.
Probably best to start pulling it down, seeing how it is progressively becoming more audible, and nip it in the bud, before it becomes a monster.

A loose ACR solenoid. Most I see are just a tad over finger tight and have an exhaust trail up them  :nixweiss:

No ACR's in a stock 06
