Progressive Monotube Upgrade
« on: June 08, 2012, 10:36:37 AM »

Just did the upgrade last night. Went pretty smooth. All in about 3 hours start to finish. Haven't road tested it yet but looking forward to it. Will post once I do.

Getting ready to do mine this weekend. Any suggestions to make the install go smoothly.

I did mine this past weekend. Ride is great. Install took a little longer than I anticipated. Had too many  :drink: breaks during and called it quits for the night after getting the right fork completed. The next day getting the left one out was a b*tch. A little bit of rust really seated it at the top of the tree. After kroil and a lot of pounding I got it out. Everything else was straight forward. You know you're in trouble when while working on the bike you pause to admire what you're drinking and snap a pic to send to your friend. At 9.7% it doesn't take many to slow things down.

One tip I do have though. I've read on another site that a lot of guys used ratchet straps or other methods to compress the fork to get the cap back on. For both of mine I just stood the fork on the ground and put my sternum right over, leaned on it and spun it on the first couple threads. It doesn't require that much pressure to do so.

I did them myself on the '08....only difference on the '12 will be having to be extra careful 'cause of all the chrome and perfect paint. Was not at all difficult though. I'm assuming that all the torque specs will have remained the same as the '08, as that is the only manual i have right now.

Not answering for him, but IMO, I would.  Particularly the bushings, as they wear quickly...they have something like a teflon coating on them that wears off.  New seals would just be insurance...it would be a bitch to get it all together and then have a leak due to reusing seals.  And they are both relatively cheap items.  Even though the oil is not doing much work with the monotubes.

I didn't. Only had 6,800 miles on bike. If you're gonna do seals then you could use a piece of 1-1/2" pvc to drive them in. Split the pipe and then wrap around tube. From info i've read...

For the seals what I do is take a length of 1 1/2 copper pipe and cap one end with a copper sweat cap then I have a big fender washer that fits over the slider and is smaller than the leg. Then I use a 4' wood workers pipe clamp an press in the seal. Works like a charm.

I've been lurking on the site for a while via Tapatalk. Just haven't posted much. Things around here have changed exponentially. I remember the early days when we had a handful of every day posters on the site. Glad to see your back around Terry. Miss you guys. And a big shout out to Don- Twolane we talked before the install and he pointed out a few tips that he had and the job went well.
