GPS Bomb
« on: June 09, 2012, 04:59:52 PM »

A friend from China Lake sent these pictures yesterday..  Apparently one of his fellow employees left a Garmin GPS on his window suction cup mount and either the hot sun and faulty battery charger caused this   :'(

Subject: GPS

An employee at China Lake left his GPS in the bracket attached to the

windshield in the sun. The battery overheated and exploded. See the damage

in the attached pictures. A good lesson for all of us!

It would probably be more accurate to say the battery caught fire, which hasn't been uncommon with Li-ion batteries over the years.  Laptops have also been known to catch fire, as well as many other items with Li-ion batteries including some electric cars.  Tends to be caused by failures in the controller circuitry in the batteries.  It really does pay to pay attention to the warnings when using this technology; I know Garmin warns about leaving their units in the sun (which seems a little strange when they have you mount them to the windshield of your car, where of course there would never be any sun and high temps, right?).  We definitely remove ours from the dash top mount and disconnect it from power whenever we leave the car, both because of this potential issue as well as the obvious desire to not make the car a target for smash and grab thieves.

I think about this sort of thing every time someone starts a thread asking about the Li-ion batteries being hawked as replacements batteries in motorcycles, especially the ones made with cheap Chinese components.

I've seen a similar pic a while back (maybe same one?  The interknot works that way...)  They were referencing a faulty power plug.  If you look, that's where the heat appears to originate.

We've got a few of America's finest firefighters on the site.  Maybe one could lend their experienced opinion here?

Yeah,
those pictures were attributed to a suspected iPhone power plug in 2009, so they've been circulating and being attributed to different things.

Fires normally burn up and out leaving a very distinguishable "V" pattern pointing back to the origin of the fire. Looking at the picture if I were investigating this fire I would be looking to see what was in (plugged in if that was an option) the area where I have placed the circle. I would want to look at another car of the same make and model as the one burned to see what the vehicle looked like stock. Also would want to talk to the occupants to see what they had (personal belongs) in the area of the origin of the fire. Is there the possibility the origin could be what has been described.. Yes... could be several other things... Yes.

Always hate it when Snopes ruins an otherwise perfectly good story.
