Tour/Luggage rack suggestions
« on: August 03, 2006, 09:56:28 PM »

I am trying to get some idea for a bag rest on back. I like the curved luggage rack, but have the laydown lic. and this won't fit. I plan on ordering the tourpack at some point but don't have the jingle right now.

Anybody do anything different that could steer me? I'm going on the Peterson ride in september and need to carry the wife and you know that means luggage.  :)

Garz I'm going to tell her what you said. You know once she get's talking your not going to get a word in. ;D

If I was riding solo like you I'd get use the tour bag that straps to the backrest and sets on the seat. I did that when I rode to the 100th and it worked great.

[smiley=nervous.gif]  Uh, I was lookin' out for HER interest, ya know. [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Hey, the Atlanta 100th kick-off? Were you in our group? I can't remember.

Anyway, I usually do the bag-on-the-seat thing... did that last weekend to South Beach. But for the 2 to 3 week trips I need that and the rack... like I had on my old Road King.  We take lots 'o stuff.

Nope not me on the 100th Kick-off. I rode up to Milwaukee. I was checking at Harley for a bag rest and wanted to get the low profile one because I liked the looks. Nope I have the lay down plate so it won't work.

I go to plan B, get the regular rack. Nope it won't work I have the low profile back rest.  :'(

Plan C- I buy a new back rest and rack. I hesitate on this because I want to get a new seat and will probably go with the Corbin. I think you have to use there backrest but somebody who has that seat please enlighten me.

First time I've tried putting in a link... hope I didn't screw anything up. [smiley=nervous.gif]  Anyway, J&P has some interesting possibilities.  Ah, but you have lay-down plate mount... so solly, I tink no workie.

And no, the regular rack sure won't work on our short back rests... I tried the one from Neety's, thinking maybe I could force it to work... nope, the P&A book didn't lie.  [smiley=confused5.gif]

Not sure of the cost involved, but you can convert to the '05 setup w/Stealth Luggage Rack. This will require you to move your license plate, but all these parts can be purchased from dealer, and when you do get tourpak it will fit over top that luggage rack w/o having to take it (luggage rack) off. I have seen this done on a  [smiley=pumpkin.gif] that didn't have a tourpak and they did it for same reason/circumstance as you (no tourpak).

Thanks Garz and Dood. I think I might just borrow a friends back rest with the rack for the run. Either of you know if the Harley backrest will work with a Corbin seat or do you need to buy new from Corbin? My wife is already pissin about the ride with the stock seat. Can't say I blame her, I don't like it either.

Hi Bob:

Just curious why you want a Corbin? I've never had a Corbin yet that wasn't hard as a brick and uncomfortable. They look good but I'll give up looks for comfort.

I would have agreed with that before I stuck with a Corbin thru the break-in period. Now I would not ride on anything else. The break-in is a bitch, felt like sitting on a concrete block but it is worth it. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I have heard the same thing about Corbin. Last through the breakin and it's great. I like the looks and if the breakin info is correct then I'm set and the wife is happy. I'm starting to like the stock seat which is hard but hte wife wants something more substantial for her backside.   ;)

Actually, the stock seat felt OK to me, too, but for the NC trip I wanted to go with Mustang since I've had one for so many years.  I'd switch back and forth between stock and Mustang, but the stock rider backrest takes too much trouble to put all that hardware back on. So, the Mustang has been sorta permanent.   I need my backrest  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

I just finished a 3000 mile trip on the stock seat and I was suprised that it really wasn't bad at all. However, I like the Mustang and I too need the backrest which makes Mustangs seat desirable due to the fact that the backrest tilts forward. I had a T-Bag in the passenger seat with the stock rider backrest in place and it was a pain getting on and off with no room to swing the leg over making me wish the backrest folded forward.
