2012 Ultra Classic Rattle
« on: June 10, 2012, 06:46:37 PM »

Having a slight issue with a little rattle under load on my Ultra. Thought is was pre detonation but it's not had it back to check the tune that was done. It seem to get noisier the hotter it gets. It seems to disappear at over 3000 or so RPM's Don't know where it's coming from. I can be running down the HWY at 65 and throttle up and will get a rattle. Will also get this in lower gears and lower speeds also. What's everyone's thought.

Most likely detonation (ping).  When the engine gets hotter, and the intake air temperature gets hotter, detonation gets worse.  Just because someone supposedly "checked" the tune doesn't mean it isn't detonation.  I had someone tune my bike and then retune it some time back and he never did get rid of the problem (I took care of it myself).  Sadly, there are plenty of people running around claiming to be tuners who aren't much good.

It's impossible to give you a 100% accurate diagnosis over the internet, so I won't try to tell you detonation is the only possibility.  But it is the number one suspect.  Make sure you are running the correct grade of fuel from a high volume station (to make sure you're getting fresh fuel).  Try a couple different stations and different brands to see if there is any difference.  And look around for a better tuner and get his opinion.  btw, are you running stock, or have a canned map downloaded, or did this person do a custom tune?

Jerry,
Have used many different gas station and always use a octane boost with every tank. Dealer did cams and high compression pistons and exhaust system and tune before I picked up the bike. Ran well all winter and started to notice it on the way back from Daytona. At the 5 K service they said they had to retard the timing after break in. Seemed OK right after pick up but with the weather getting hotter and longer days, couple of hundred mile rides it seem to get a little more by the end of the day. Yes it was a custom tune. That's what i have been told. Could this rattle be in the transmission or some where else. Thanks for any help. Not a mechanic just a rider.

Could it be chitty gas (10% ethanol), summer blend gas... also with new/different cam could this be "lugging" the engine since you are noticing it under 3000 RPM? Also couldn't carbon buildup create/cause similar detonation issues? :nixweiss:

As Jerry (grc) said hard to diagnos this over the internet... could be several causes. :(

Had the same problem with mine....detonation...I bore scoped the cylinder and found that there was a build up of carbon on the pistons which had to increase the compression and when the motor got hot.....detonation....just as you discribed. :'(

Now I only buy fuel from Top Tier Gasoline Retailers  http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

Add 4 oz of Valvtect SUPER OCTANE BOOST at every other fill up.

I check for carbon on pistons at each oil change and if necessary clean pistons with Seafoam.

I would not let this go for very long....in my case the first indication of my problem was the pinging....then it starting using oil....I think that the pinging caused piston slapping which lead me to having to replace the pistons and cylinders.....

Good Luck....I hope that you don't go through what I did.

I noticed in your post you had cams and high compression piston.....I hope you did not put in SE255...that is a back combination :'(

No not the 255's they put the 259 cams in it. Seems to have gotten worse with the heat

does the clicking hold steady under load around 2500 rpm......my issue was with the motor hot, cursing at 2200rpm (3rd thru 6th gears) and if i rolled the throttle slighty to gently increase the RPMs clicking would beging at 2400-2800....very repeatable...

That sounds like mine. Over 3000 it seems to go away but not all the time. Dealer rode it for about 20 miles the other day but it seems to be later and hotter. The rode it on a cold motor. How do you clean the pistons.

If your map has the Knock control turned on, it would have to be a pretty horrible map to still hear pinging. The knock control will retard the spark advance up to 8 degrees to prevent detonation. Sounds you you need to have the map better dialed in below 3000rpms but in the interim, make sure the knock control is turned on. The field will have a "1" in it.

Try retarding your timing in that RPM range and see how it runs.

Also have you tried the HD or Amsoil octane boost?  I run the Amsoil octane boost in my 08 SE3 every tank full ....no more pinging / knocking at all !!

Tune it properly and you won't need to waste money on that octane boost product.

A few questions first:
1. The noise, is it comming from left side, down, around engine block?
2. Is it sound like washer rattling?
3. It appears every time you speed up a bike (adding the RPM on constant speed)

If the answers are yes, then is your gear shift lever on gear shift shaft loosen. It has to be replaced, because the teeth are eaten up.

Drive safe,

I have almost 13,000 miles on my '12 CVO Ultra, I have almost gotten used to the rattles. I think it is a rocker arm - push rod issue. I have read where just as my '93 the cam bearings may fix some of the rattles. If I built my 110 I would take it apart and repair it, I used to build a lot of Porsches' and other engines and I don't like the noise at all. The dealer says it is normal, I have no metal in the oil filter and it has not increased in noise, nor has it seemed to effect the horsepower. So I guess one of these cold winter days I will replace parts on my own and see if I can fix it. I again have ignored the noises, I do hate it!
