Looking for new handlebars
« on: June 16, 2012, 06:51:23 PM »

After taking a long trip last weekend, I decided my stock handlebars are less than ideal for long distances.  I ended up with major pain at the base of my neck and in my shoulders.  I was thinking about adding something with a little more altitude (attitude).  My concern has to do with the low speed handling if I go with a 12 or 14 inch ape.  Any feedback and/or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks, Lou

The stock bars SUCK! I run the Wild 1 Chubbys 575 bars, and I love them. A number of others here run them too. They move your hands about 2" back, an inch or so up, and about 2" out from the stock bars positions... plus the angle of the grips is better than the stock bars. I like the feel of the 575s MUCH better than the cramped-feeling stock bars. And, the Chubbys are 1 1/4" - which makes them look much beefier on the bike, and the chrome is perfect on them.

My friend just got the Chubby 575 and just loves them. She says it took the pressure off her neck and shoulders.

Last Saturday I sat on a Street Glide with 12" Paul Yaffee bars. Sorry, can't remember the name.

WOW, the bike is significantly easier to pick ou off the kickstand!!!!!!!

Riding position felt comfortable. But at 5'-8" the 10" might fit me better.

To each, their own. I'm not an "apes" kind of rider. I like the hand position of the 575s, and I like my hands fairly low. The picture makes it look like your hands would be outside of the fairing - but that's just the camera angle.

Here are a couple of better ones...

Check out Yaffe Ape Hanger 10".  Lots of "attitude" without ridiculous "altitude".

I put on RSD Convoy bars on my SG.  Supposed to be 9" rise, but different manufacturers use different ways to measure, apparently.  Only raised my bars about 1" up and 1" back, and a little wider than stock.  Better, but I wanted a little more change in position.

Good Luck!

The Yaffe bars are called Monkey Bars. I have the 10's on my 2010 and will probably go with 12's if I trade for a 2013.

Hoghvn, let me know if you get the Monkey Bar 12s.  I'll buy them from you.   :2vrolijk_21:

How are the 10's as far as helping to alleviate back and shoulder pain?  Also, how is the low speed handling compared to the stock bars?

Thanks, Lou

My hands are only in the bottom quarter of the mirror... I can see things in the mirror fine. I am thinking of lowering the bars a little more though. I like my hands low, and lowering the bars another inch should get my hands out of the mirrors completely.

Wife just had the Chubby 575 put on her bike today and the top on her knuckles are in the mirror.  Not enough to make a big deal as far as obstruction goes according to her.  It's a little over 50 miles from the Harley shop to our house and that is all she has ridden with them but said it made a good bit of difference.  I sat on her bike and really like the feel of the bars myself.

Did you need the 4 inch extension on the clutch line or anything special thanks.

Thanks, 575's on the way! I don't want to jack this post but is there a post on installing bars on these bikes? I've changed bars before but not when dealing with the fairing.
Thanks!

With the 10 or 12" monkey bars you can not see the fairing mirrors. I just ordered today 14" Monkey bars that will go on my next bike.
