My 03 SERK with a 103 with Cometic .030 head gaskets and S&S 570 gear driven cams started running rough and got hard to start.  Kicks back some when you try to start it and takes a lot of spinning it over to start it.  Once it's started, it runs kind of rough, seems like it's missing out once in a while .   The intake manifold and throttle body had a pretty gooey, oily look to it and the throttle plate was pretty thick with an oily/carbon coating.  I took it all apart to clean and removed all the sensors.  I had an engine temp sensor so I replaced it.  The MAP sensor had the opening on it about half carboned over so I replaced it, then I decided while it was apart to replace all the sensors and I even bought two new injectors to put in while I had it apart.  The bike has about 60K on it so I figured I might as well replace all of them while it was apart.  Put it all back together and it seemed to run a little better but it's still pretty hard to start.  I'd like to check the fuel pressure and coil, but don't have any way to do that.  Other than that, what else might be causing this hard to start and poor running condition?  I also have the head vents, vented to the outside air and it's been that way for about 40K miles (along with the cam and head gaskets)
Any suggestions on where to look before I give up and take it to the dealer?
TIA,
Steve

Intake leaks are common, also inspect the throttle blade shaft for any cracks. Perform a compression and leakdown test to see the general health of the rings and valve seats. Also changing the injectors with out a follow-up tune can have adverse affects due to the varying flow rates.

60 K,,, how long since you gave it new spark plugs?

Maybe new plugs, check the HT leads and check the tune first up.

My guess is that compression is down a bit and more than likely a bit of blow by,

With the 570 cams, and maybe the timing a little advanced, that would explain the hard starting, kick back, and carbon/oily deposits in the intake .

It's very important to have your throttle position sensor adjusted properly. could be alot of your problems

The plugs and wires are new and compression tested good.   But your last statement about the 570 cams might be most of my problems.  I'm going to try a little different timing and I fully charged the battery and that seemed to help with the starting---see if that continues.

I didn't realize there was an adjustment to it, but I'll check it out to make sure it's right.   Thanks

You have the breathers vented outside the TB, it has oil in it and is hard to start?

What more do we need to know? You could Leak it down for fun.

Honestly, I would skip that and tear it down.

Thanks,  that is kind of what I was afraid of but it's probably what I'll have to do.  I would like it much better if this were winter--oh well, I"ve got another bike to ride.

If you have the luxury of a second bike, take your time and do it right. You put 60K on that bike, you must like it.

Some other things you could check as well.

check the breathers in the rocker boxes be sure they arent saturated, as well as possibly an intake seal leaking and with reversion causing the oil to be in the intake.   there was a run on those heads doing that especially in 05, yes i saw its an 03
