Re-Torque the neck bolt?
« on: June 21, 2012, 11:15:35 AM »

I'm bringing my bike to the dealer to perform the recall and re-flash the radio (bass ports) and do a 3 hole fluid change.  I read something a while ago about the neck bolt loosening and needing to be checked or re-torqued?  I don't have a vibration problem, I often ride no-hands at various speeds except for below 20MPH...lots of steering vibration, should I have them look at it and check the torque?

I would. Just had to have mine done yesterday. Big difference. Had the 5k done 10 days earlier and that dealer's tech "didn't notice it" during his "test ride". That's for another thread though...

If you are experiencing any occilation of the handlebars, then I'd have it checked.  Mine is rock steady at all speeds.  I have checked the fall away on my jackstand and it is only a little over 1 cycle.  I am not aware of a particular torque setting for the nut, but the fall away should not be more than 1.5

Are you referring to the brake switch recall, or is there another one out there??

Have not heard of any recalls other than the brake switch for the '11s.  It is easy to check on the HD website by going to the owners page and imputing your VIN.

Thanks Greg . . . I did that and only saw the 1, but thought I would ask anyway. Just in case.

A very good idea!   :2vrolijk_21:

You can also check on the US DOT website.

There are two separate issues with the steering head preload setting.  First was and still is the fact that Harley does a really lousy job of setting it at the factory.  Second was an incorrect torque setting for the stem lock nut that they supposedly corrected back in 2009.  Assuming your dealer checks the bearing preload (fallaway) and finds it out of tolerance, they will loosen the stem lock nut and turn the adjuster to tighten or loosen the bearing preload.  Then they will tighten the lock nut, hopefully to the correct torque value, so the adjustment can't move.

Read through the attachment for a better idea of what's involved.

Holy Shiznit!  I have all this minor crap that needs to be done to the bike and no time to do it myself.  The guy I bought the bike from (member) put an Andrews 30t sprocket and he or the dealer put the Falcon belt on the bike.  I went and bought the Gates manufactured belt for $115 and I thought i would have them throw it on for me since they were working on the bike........6 hours labor or $540 plus the cost of gaskets!   I rarely ride two up, I seldom gear up, try or pull the front wheel off the ground or burn the back tire, I think i'm going to hope for the best with the Falcon belt and carry the Gates with me just in case?  YOUR thoughts?

A lot of those belts broke.  Under easy riding conditions much as you describe.  If you never ride very far from home or never need to be somewhere on time while on the bike there's no reason not to continue using the very doubtful Falcon belt.

Yeah...not real comfortable with it, I just have a hard time spending $700.00.  Not many options because even if I wanted to go back to stock $700.00.  The bike only has 2,300 miles on it and probably only a thousand with the sproket and belt.  I check it everytime I clean the bike for cracks or shavings.  I have a long trip planned for August 2nd, I may make the change by then becasue i would hate to ruin the trip and get stranded.

Look for an independent who will likely change the belt in less time (real hours versus flat rate book hours) and at a much more realistic labor rate.  In this economy, I'm sure you can find qualified folks willing to work for a lot less than $90 per hour.

Thanks Jerry, I thought of that.  If it weren't for the recall and the radio re-flash I wouldn't go to the dealer at all.
