Motor Mod Recommendations...Please Help
« on: August 07, 2006, 08:02:21 AM »

I am appealing to the expert help available on this site to help me decide on some motor mods that I want to do to my '03 SERK.  One of my primary objectives is to go to gear drive cams, but I can't decide which ones, and I thought that while I'm at it, I might as well take it all to a higher level.  Here is my present setup:

103 Stroker motor
SE 103+ Heads
SE 103+ Pistons
SE 264 Cams
Rinehart Exhaust
3:37:1 Gearing w/six-speed transmission

This setup with the 264 cams yields really good peak horsepower (119) and torque (117) numbers, but it comes on late in the power band.  I'm a big fellow, and ride two-up some of the time, so I'm looking for more low to mid-range torque.  Here is what I am considering:

Harley's 113" Bigger Bore Cylinder Kit
Keep the same heads (Max Cam Lift is .65)
SE Bigger Bore Pistons
Zippers Redshift 647 Gear Drive Cams (Any Other Recommendations?)
Fueling Oil Pump
Timken Bearing Upgrade
What about a bigger Throttle Body?  How do I decide which one?

I'm not opposed to making it an even bigger motor, but I want to keep the "103" look...that's one reason for reusing the existing heads that have "Screamin' Eagle" on them.  And, I don't really want to change the stroke.  Please give me your comments on the planned mods, and I would appreciate any further recommendations that you may have. I want to keep this bike/motor for the long haul, so I'm looking for a quality build.  Thanks.

I was happy to see this motor build as I'm presently
in the process of something real similar, also with the "bigger bore 113".  However, I had planned to use the CNC HTCC heads.  If I was more interested in midrange, rather than low end power, what cam would you recommend?  And why not the D&D Boarzilla pipe?  Does anyone have any experience with this over the Fatcat?    What air cleaner?  Are there some choices in this?
Thank you for any advise and direction you can give!

113" from Harley only I would have Zippers CNC the heads like their 103 muscle kit program.
Zippers 657 Cams, 54mm throttle body, Bassani Road Rage 2 into 1 unless you need a ghost pipe than the D&D performance or the D&D Borzilla.    Dont forget the roller rockers as I didnt seem them listed on your list.

Another Choice would be to buy the Jim's 120 in Silver, Have Zippers rework your 103 heads, put in the 657 cam with the Zippers 54 mm Throttle body, Fueling Oil Pump, Zippers Schim, Borzilla Road Rage,

Other optional cam would be the s&s 640 cam and if your looking for more torque down low you could also look at the 625 cam.

One other possibility would be to consider a bottom end upgrade to the Zippers 124 then have zippers rework your heads, and use their 54 throttle body, Fueling oil pump, Fueling Lifters, Zippers Pushrods (Stiffer), Have pistons thermal coated as well as the heads and then hold on :)

If I were going to 113 i would probably go all the way to the 124 or 116 since your going to tear apart the bottom end anyhow to put in the timken.

Do you have to go with the Timken if you go 113"?  I have considered doing the 113 kit also but was not sure the bottom end could handle it in stock form...

I believe the rule of thumb is if your motor is producing over 110 ft/lbs TQ you need to start thinking about Timken Bearing or at least the GP Designs Outer Bearing Support[/ [smiley=pumpkin.gif]

1. The GP Designs bearing support is not yet available for the 'B' motor!

2. Due to the need of boring the cases to fit the bigger cylinders you would be mad not to do the timken conversion at the same time!

Cheers

Aussie,
My bad. You're correct about the GP Designs bearing support not available for the "B" motor yet. When I posted that I failed to look at what type bike Street Stalker owned as I still had SCRM-R's SERK on my mind.

Also agree not upgrading to Timken bearing while the cases are split wouldn't be in the best interest of the motor. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure especially if you are there and can do the upgrade easily. IMO.

SCRM,

You dont HAVE to do it by why wouldn't ya do it.   Consider this most of the big motor manufacturers by default put in the timken bearing to start with.   That to me is a great big hint.   Like Mikey said, if it were mine and I was going that route, its a no brainer for me, Timken would be done.
