Gel seats??
« on: June 26, 2012, 04:49:15 PM »

I posted last week regarding concerns about my new Corbin Solo Classic seat for my '12 CVO SG.  Unfortunately after a weekend ride I have concluded it is not going to work for me.  I just do not like the new design of the Corbin seat.  So that seat and backrest will be for sale if anyone may be interested.  Otherwise Ebay.  Having said that I was quite intrigued by member 2timen's setup he had done at a local upholstery shop.  Because I think my stock seat is quite comfortable and just need a backrest for it.  So I called and talked to Seth at the upholstery shop and he patiently described everything he does.  Cool dude.  So after I send him some pics of my stock seat I hope to get things going so he can make me a backrest.

So Seth also told me he can turn my stock seat into a gel seat if I wanted.  I've never sat on a motorcycle gel seat that I know of but have read about them before.  Can anyone verify how much better or comfortable this might be compared to the stock padding?  Any pros or cons?  Thanks

Gel holds both heat and cold, so in the summer sunshine it can be brutal when it's been sitting in the sun for a while.

Bob did the pro pad for me and it feel's awesome.   :2vrolijk_21:  I recommend the pro pad over the gel for all the reason's mentioned above.

Bearcat1,  Seth just adds a strip of gel at the pressure point not the whole seat. I personally don't care for it, but some people really like it. You won't see that much heat from it. It's all personal choice. I think you will be very happy with his work.

Man I think your setup looks awesome.  All I need is the matching rider backrest.  My rider seat, passenger seat and passenger backrest are already all matched up nicely.  Only thing now is, is that Seth wasn't sure he had the SG seat material.  He thinks its elephant which I think too.  But he said he is working on getting it.  Sending him a picture later today.

So you see without being able to try the gel strip there is just no way of knowing if I would like it or not.  WOuld maybe love it or maybe not.

He added the gel to my wifes seat, now after about a year I think she wants to have it removed. I have never cared for the gel. When we go on long trips we both use the air hawk. Swear by them. As far as matching your seat he is looking for the right material. My brother out of Las Vegas has the same bike as you and wants the same set up. I know that seth has looked at my brothers seat, so he knows what to look for.

Gel is comfy if the temps are right. In the summer it retains heat and will fry you. I had it in my previous seat and had to get a lamb skin pelt to cover it. In the winter it becomes like the frozen blue gel used for coolers. My current seat does NOT have gel.

I've pretty much concluded that I won't go with gel just due to the temp issues.  Thanks for all the feedback.
