2012 CVO Ultra Tank Emblem Issue
« on: June 28, 2012, 11:34:15 PM »

While washing my ride a few days back I noticed the right side tank emblem moved when I ran the chamois across the front of the tank.  The emblem was not stuck to the double sided pad about a third of the way back.  Has anyone else seen this?   :nixweiss:

Thanks

Mine peeled twice. The third set is still in the box and will go to the new owner if and when I trade

You're not running any tank emblems right now?

Chit. Mine is loose at the front of the right side medallion.  The double sided tape is pulling away from the medallion.  Still stuck to the tank.  Asked my dealer to order a replacement.

Good grief.  What about pulling the existing one off and just replacing the tape with something that's actually worth a chit?  If you get another emblem, apparently, you're just going to get more chitty tape, too!

Is this only on the Ultras? I've not heard of it on the SGs.

Well just in case something got f***ed up during the process I want it to be on their dime.  Had a fender spear added to my '07 when it was new.  After a couple months one end of it was coming loose.  Dealer replaced and it has been A-OK for over five years.  So hopefully new medallion with be good also.  We'll see.  But since it is under factory warranty I prefer to let them have all the 'fun.'   :2vrolijk_21:

It's probably from the same batch of adhesive they used on those wheel weights that kept flying off everyones wheels. ;)

If the adhesive is old or from a bad batch, there may be hundreds of emblems in the system that will eventually do the same thing.  So if the replacements also fail, just replacing the tape with some good 3M exterior grade molding tape may do the trick.  But, if I remember correctly those emblems aren't flat; the emblems and the tank surface have compound curves that need to match exactly.  If the emblem isn't positioned correctly, the adhesive is much more likely to fail.  If one end of the emblem is lifting up off the tank, that's a good indicator that the shape of the part is wrong or it was applied in the wrong location.

Of course it could also be a lack of proper surface preparation and adherence to installation process instructions.  I remember having issues in the auto plants whenever people decided they knew more than the engineers and started shortcutting the process.

I applied an adhesive liquid to the outer side of the tape and the emblem ( with dealer permission ) and applied pressure for several minutes. The next day I headed out on a multi state planned ride and rode in 105 plus temps and rainstorms and so far the emblem is holding.  As hot as it was I'm suprised the emblem didn't melt to the tank.

Apparently I wasn't the only one with this problem either and the dealer would have first tried a repair before going through a total replacement.  I agree with your replies about bad tape, alignment, etc. I hope the problem will be noted in HD Service system enough that HD will come out with an update/fix for this issue.

Curious to know from others who have or have had this problem - is the adhesive loose from the tank or from the mediallion itself?  In my case the front end of the right side mediallion for about 1" back is loose.  But the adhesive has separated from the mediallion.  It is still well adhered to the tank.
