Mini Apes on a CUSE6?
« on: July 01, 2012, 08:13:12 AM »

OK, I've got a CUSE6, I've got to change bars.  As so many others have posted, I've got the pain at the base of my neck, & at my shoulder blades.

I'm looking to possibly install mini apes. I just got an estimate from my local dealer! Wow! $1700 give or take a dollar. They say I need to change both clutch & brake lines. Does this sound high? They say 8 hours to do it!

Has anyone done this handlebar change out? I'm looking for some advice & also for some pics of these bars installed.

Also would appreciate any comments on other handlebar possibilities & pics to go with it.

Thanks!

danner55,
Here is a thread that I started awhile back. Some of the responses, not sure what size handlebars you are looking for. I am actually looking more to the 12" apes now. I sat on a SG with 14" Paul Yaffe Monkey bars and they were pretty good but just a little high for touring I believe. Hope this helps, you can also do a search on the site for other topics. I also asked about wild 1 handlebars whcih most responders advised of.

Mongo,

I've reseached alot of sites but looking for some input on the HD mini apes. Just wondering how they feel over stock bars. Also the cost is really high! Do you feel it is justified?

Thanks, Dan

I'm about to install. Wild Ones 575 bars.   They are really good with the Hight , pull back and wrist angle.  If they wouldn't be high enough for you, you can look on their website and get some other ideas.  They make great bars.  :2vrolijk_21:

cvostu ,
Are you going to do the handlebar change out yourself? What do you think of the estimate of $1700 from my local HD dealer/

Thanks

Dealer charged me 4 hours labor to install my WO575s on my cuse7.  But he also did the front fork cartridges at the same time so some of the items were being removed for access to the forks and may have made the 'additional' labor for the bars a little less.  5 or 6 hours just for just the bars may not be outrageous.

Fortunately the clutch and brake lines did not have to be extended on the cuse7.  But when I did the WO575s on my cuse2 several years ago we had to extend everything, clutch line, brake line, throttle/idle cables.  So it may depend on which bars you go with as to whether or not the stock lines will work.

Seems to my that the estimate of $1700 is awfully high.  I would ask for a complete breakdown for parts and labor to evaluate.

That sounds really high for just labor.  I hear 5 hrs is about how many hours they are allowing to do a handlebar change.  Hopefully everything will reach.  I have a small shop nearby,, he says he wont mind doing it on a slow day. At about 80 per hour, I was thinking about 400.00 or so.   I would ask around.  Maybe you can find a place that's not a hd dealer.

I'm still looking for some advice on what bars you have installed? If possible post some pics. I haven't seen any installed on a CVO Ultra. All comments greatly appreciated as I don't know what ones to install. The price to change them out is expensive so I'm trying to make the right choice.

This cost is way out of line!   :-X. 5 hrs is what Harley considers to replace the bars.  Does this cost they quoted you include the bars?  I switched to the 575 Chubby's and I couldn't be happier.  Took my mc to a private shop where my Harley mechanic works and I was charged around $350 and that included labor for 3 other OEM parts that I had him install.  You need to shop around for another quote.   :2vrolijk_21:

LovemyCVOgirl,

Yes that includes the bars, lines, extensions for the heated grips & TBW. Yes it seems high to me. That's why I'm asking for everyones opinion. I'm in no hurry as my next long trip isn't till november. Could you post some pics of your bike with the new bars/

Thanks, Dan

Hey Dan, Here are some pictures of my new bars

I put my old handlebars up against my new ones so you can see the difference in the diameter
