Stange Knocking
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:53:33 AM »

My 2011 CVO Street Glide seems to have developed a knocking at 15,000 miles. Common or problem?

The knowing seems to be coming from the front right side of the rear cylinder. I guess it's always been there since these things seem to rattle quite a bit. But sitting at idle other day warming it up a bit for an oil change I really noticed it.

It's not a rattly clacking sound but a knock.

Didn't change after the oil change.

Bike only has aftermarket pipes and a tuner.

Help!! I'm concerned.

You may want to take a look at your lifters...

Also don't trust your absolute first impression of the sound's location.  Unless you've got up close and personal to really know for sure it can surprise sometimes how resonance and other factors allow mechanical sounds to travel.

Considering all the reported failures of lifters and cam bearings in the past few years, I think it would be very wise to get it checked out by a qualified tech ASAP and stop riding it until you do.  Since it is an '11 model, it's still in warranty so I'd suggest calling up the dealer and having them come get it.

Any noise that wasn't there before and starts suddenly is not a "normal" sound.

Thanks folks!

I was thinking cams, lifters or rocker arms.

I don't know how much more up close and personal I can get except for a stethascope (Spelling??). But I have me ear up as close as you can get to a running motor and the sound is definitely from the right side front of the rear cylinder.

The knock is audible when I add throttle under load. Uphill etc.... It's not loud but it is there.

The motor does sound great when I start her up though. No knock or even rattling.

Sounds like you have an idea.

Let them try.

I don't think HD wants to start telling it's proven customer based that putting a set of pipes and a tuner on their bike will void the warranty. That would be a huge marketing problem to overcome for a motorcycle company that builds motorcycles that are only sold because of the tradition of the brand.

If all is tame prior to warm-up, then 2 areas here, would be eyeballed.
Valvetrain component parts, and/or piston/bore fitment.
Not saying that this is your issue, as without hearing it, tough to verify, but those are the 2 areas that would be effected by heat, and lessened oil viscosity, once warmed.

Moving from a 2001 Heritage experience to my 2012 CVO SG - The difference in engine noise is significant. The 96 was smooth & quiet compared to the 110 bucket of shaking bolts experience. No - I didn't test ride the 110 prior to purchase.

I took the bike in early at 680 miles to have the 1000 mile check up done because HD sent me the newsletter saying they REFORMULATED the SYN3 oil.
R I I G H T t t t... The engine had Driveability problems from the start - i.e. spitting & popping on cold start & stalling on pull-out. My ALL-Stock 110 also ran HOT - the rear cylinder cooling routine would always kick in at traffic lights if ambient temp was more than 75F. It also pings on full throttle acceleration running SUNOIL's 93 octane. No pinging with 100 UL octane

My 110 sounds\ed like a coffee can filled about halfway with pennies - being shaken lightly while the engine was running. Not satisfied, I remembered that lubricant could make a difference.... I called Gene Smith at AMSOIL in York PA. We agreed, based on his discussions with his numerous clients running 110s that we would switch to 20-40 wt Synthetic AMSoil.

After this one change, I noticed several things.

1. Upon startup - It QUIETED down my shaking bucket of bolts significantly!
2. Even when riding in the 95F +, the temperature management systems Rarely comes on at lights.
3. I notice a cooler running engine between my legs.
4. When I merged onto RT 30 (always full throttle) I noticed a Big improvement in power and smoothness. Specifically, the wind screen rose much higher between gears - I thought, what the...  Now the 110 pulled like a tractor! It was smoother & quieter.
5. The spitting & sputtering lessened, but didn't go away. I have a feeling the catalytic converter is not helping - but I like the no-smell feature this brings.

I also changed to 75-90 AMS oil gear oil, with slightly quieter & easier shifting vs the SYN3.

Summary, the 110 is a lot of big heavy metal flopping around. Next, I'll swap the chain case oil & see what happens.

Just for kicks, at your next routine oil change you might consider installing SYN3 or any other oil to see if badness returns.  Not to summarily "put down" Amsoil but in this case simply changing out the break-in oil for anything fresh might've been the real cure.

My wife comes home and said can you listen to my engine it is make some noise.  I start it up and it is rattling like crazy.  I asked when did it start, about 35 mile ago when I left work.  Needless to say I had it towed to the dealer.  They took it apart and found the cams were also not hardened and had worn.

The only thing they could figure was piston slap.  We received a new engine at 9800 miles and is has been running strong ever since.
