Improved MPG on 2011 Fullsac Install...Why?
« on: July 03, 2012, 08:46:45 AM »

I'm hoping Steve George will chime in on this one. This might be an apples to roast beef comparison, but here goes......

My previous CVO was a 2009 SEUC with the Fullsac header and 1.75" baffles. I typically got 38-39 MPG with this bike. Fast forward to this year. I have a 2011 SERG with the same Fullsac header and 2.0" baffles and I'm consistently getting 42-44 MPG. Soooooooo, what's the difference? Here is my comparison list:

Batwing vs. Sharknose-Better aerodynamics?

1.75" vs. 2.0" baffles-Engine breathes better?

Updated ECM map-Optimized or improved settings?

Mind you, I ain't complaining. Being an engineer I tend to over-analyze everything so give me your thoughts.

I am not expert by any means, but I really think it's the areodymanics.

A good bud of mine had a Street Glide, and I (Road Glide) both bikes on cruise control and set at 60 mph. I started to pull away from him.

Just a thought.......

Jerry,  I'd attribute it to better aerodynamics, to some extent, but I don't think that would relate to a 10%+ improvement in fuel economy.  Probably a combination of that and a more consistant tune.  My bike is getting about the same MPG at speeds of 65-70.  If I push it to 80mph for a while, it drops into the 38-40 range.  All other things being equal, of course.  And I'm just running one of Steve's canned maps.

Jerry

I suspect it's the tune.
My 09 SEUC with Woods TW7H cams got 38 to 42 mpg.
The 11.5 SEUC with the same Woods cams installed by Jim hd-dude, tuned by Bob @ RC Cycles, Fullsac sport pipe and Fullsac 2.0 baffles I'm getting 46 to 50 mpg.
Even riding with JC in California (and how JC rides needs no explanation) I got 45 mpg.
IMO, good parts, quality assembly and excellent tune typically yields excellent mileage.

My 2010 SESG got better mileage after I went with the Fullsac header, baffles, and TTS with Steve's map.  It also gets better mileage than my 2003 SERK that had true duels, V&H slip-ons, and a Pwr Commander.  I attributed the fuel mileage improvement to the Fullsac stage I setup.

Right combination of parts and a good tune will definitely make a difference!
