How often do you change your plug wires?
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:01:24 PM »

How often do you all change your plug wires?  Manual says to change every 3 years regardless of milage.

Thanks and ride safe!

I guess I did them right on schedule....in 2011 on the '08......they looked bad! Under the tank and above the heads is not the most hospitable environment. Went with orange SE wires...seemed to smooth out the idle a bit.

Never keep a bike more them three years and 50,000 miles. I guess the new owners would have to change them.

I'm still running the original wires after 65K miles.  No reason to change them so far.

with stock (or mild builds),i dont see any reason to change wires every 3 years, check them for wear or cracking,if none, run them

Modern silicone jacketed plug wires don't need to be replaced every three years.  And there is nothing all that special about the harsh conditions a Harley plug wire endures, try spending 100,000 miles with the wires on your car or truck.  Speaking of which, check the maintenance intervals for most cars and trucks and you won't find short intervals for wires, and in most cases you won't find any mention of them.  Plugs vary from 60k to 100k intervals these days, and it makes good sense to inspect the wires at the same time.  But there is no instruction to automatically replace the wires.

We have become a throw away society, and the folks who are supposed to work on and fix our vehicles have mostly become a bunch of part changers.  If you really want to know if you need to change your plug wires, inspect and test them.  Unless you have abused them by pulling on the wire instead of the boots, I'll pretty much guarantee you they will still be just fine after three years, and plenty of us have been running the same wires for more than twice that amount of time with no problems whatsoever.

If you can still find someone who knows what an oscilloscope is, ask him about how you can easily check the entire secondary ignition system with a simple scope.

btw, if you're just looking for an excuse to buy new colored wires to match your bike, you don't need to use the maintenance schedule to justify the expenditure.  As far as Harley mods go, a set of wires is cheap. ;)

How to test plug wires:  With engine running and bare hands and a good ground for your body, run fingers on and around the plug wires and boots.  If you get the chit shocked out of you, it's time to change them... :huepfenlol2:

TC, don't forget; there's also the equally re-volting "stand back and wiz and see if it shocks up the stream test."

Current Harleys use the plug wires for another function along with putting fire in the hole.  Immediately after making the spark an alternate circuit which also uses the plugs and wires "reads" the combustion and the ECM analyzes the information.  So long as the new wires were electrically identical to the stock parts it shouldn't affect the secondary function adversely, assuming the replacements under consideration weren't direct OEM replacements.  I can't offer up any specific examples just now but am sure that even a little bit of looking would turn up reported cases of at least false knock detection or lack of true knock detection arising from aftermarket plug wires.

Have heard/read of the warnings on alternative plugs and wires screwing with the ION sensing system for the decade now that the system has been in place.  It's a hard thing to specifically and directly confirm though.

With so many automotive manufacturers using that type of detonation detection it seems a not too extreme assumption that most plugs and wires have that capability in mind in their application.  Could be 100% wrong.  But it's not a concern I've ever lost much sleep over.

A couple of the professional tuners on harleytechtalk (maybe on here, too) have mentioned getting screwy Ion Sense results with non-stock plugs and/or wires.

In terms of the automotive stuff, that's pretty much gone to plug-mounted individual coils anymore, hasn't it?
