Mostly so. Though next generation options wouldn't preclude interchange still being so in parts that were current interchange for the period. So (for example) plugs that were common to the era the tech was current would still be assumed to be appropriate to the tech.

Or at least that's what I've always convinced myself. Just because it's logical doesn't always mean it's so though. Like I said, it's not something I lose any sleep over.
