Raising gas Tank
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:50:46 PM »

There are a few aftermarket kits for raising the gas tank. Pretty much just a 2 inch bracket really with a bit of an offset.
Benefits would be....A bit more air circulation so a cooler engine (?)
                             A different look than stock.
By tilting the front of the tank up a bit, 2 inches. It should eliminate the speedo glare on the
                              Windshield.

Just wondered if anyone has done this and results or opinions.

I just did this.  Raised front of tank 1.75" and rear 0.5".  Made a huge difference on the buffering from the wind and got rid of glare on my shield.

What kit did you use?
Did you have to drain the tank and replace the crossover hose?
Any pictures...tips?

Yes I did have to drain tank and add longer hose.

This is the kit, 1.75" front..0.5" back.

I will try to snap pics later... It was a breeze to do, everything is included.

Thanks for the link to dkcustom lift kit.

Noticed that you did the front and back.  Did you try the front first by itself?   Why did you decide on the 1.5 inch?

Please take a pick of the part that is added and where does that bolt go?   The add said that on RG that the tank could be pushed back a bit to ease clearance, did you notice any position problems after install?

Have you noticed any difference on the temp of the engine?

Thanks again.

I did the 2" kit, it actually raises it 1.75".  I picked this size based on pics I had seen, any higher and I would see the wiring harness/track which is something I did not want to see.  I did not have any clearance issues and the option to move tank rearward is not available due to the mounting location of rear tank bolt.  I added the 1/2" to the rear to balance of the look slightly and to help keep my fuel gauge somewhat accurate.

Since the temps here in Texas have not been above 70 since I added this I can not comment on the effect this will have on engine temps. But I will say it has made a huge impact on the buffering that I would feel.

These are pics are of the front pieces.  The rear piece is basically a longer bolt and a 1/2" thick washer.  Makes getting the seat on a little more difficult.

I know I just did this, but I am looking at changing the front out for these brackets.

Makes getting the seat on a little more difficult.

Is the difficulty in getting the front of the seat to conform (bend) to the .5 higher rear, or is the placement of the tongue into the receiver more difficult?

Thanks.

It's a little of both, but more effort getting the seat to bend to fit the new angle, nothing too difficult. But be sure to check ur seat twice before riding off as the first couple of tries I thought I had it on only for it to pull off after I tugged on it a couple of times.

Has anyone tried this on a 2012 with the new fairing redesign?  The new "wings" on the fairing already come within a 1/4 inch of the tank at full lock.  I would imagine that raising the tank will not change this, but I would feel better if I was not the first.
